After getting a split on the road versus Minnesota Duluth last weekend (Friday loss, overtime win Saturday), Omaha returns to Baxter Arena for the final home series of 2023.
They will be facing a white-hot St. Cloud State University (SCSU) squad that is 6-0 in the NCHC. (Omaha is 3-3-0 in conference play.) SCSU is ranked no. 15 nationally, while Omaha has fallen out of the top 20, but received votes.
Omaha is 9-4-1 overall, while SCSU is 8-5-1. The Huskies are 28-16-2 all-time against the Mavericks.
Coach Gabinet said the team is looking forward to a good quality opponent in SCSU. “The guys are excited to keep playing well. You want to give your best effort. It’s important to stay focused,” Gabinet said.
SCSU has swept Miami, Western Michigan, and Minnesota Duluth so far this year.
Gabinet said the SCSU team is a “quick, high skilled, high energy team that plays with a lot of structure.” He noted they play “lots of clean, hard hockey” and said the Mavs need to make sure “we are playing our style.”
Gabinet said the team benefited in Duluth from the play of sophomore goaltender Simon Latkoczy.
“I like Simon’s mindset. He’s not afraid of big moments,” Gabinet said.
Latkoczy said he does a lot to prepare for games. “My preparation started in August,” Latkoczy said. “I do things every day and every night. Eight to 10 p.m. is kind of my time. I do some meditation. I work on my confidence — on the visualization. I see every game happen five times before it actually happens. I’m prepared for every possible outcome that can happen in a game.”
Gabinet noted that forwards Matt Miller and Zach Urdahl are not likely for this weekend’s games.

Next up: Omaha has a lengthy Christmas break following this weekend’s games. They will next play in the Desert Hockey Classic in Tempe Jan. 5-6. Omaha will take on UMass-Lowell at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 5. The time and opponent for Saturday’s tournament game is to be determined.
The calendar has rolled over to the final month in 2023, and Omaha is on the road for the third conference series of the season.
Omaha is coming off a sweep of non-conference foe Augustana in its inaugural season. The home-and-home series format was a good one for fans, and a group of approximately 200 fans made the trek up to Sioux Falls for Saturday’s game at the Denny Sanford Premier Center (including 40 people in the MavPuck group).
Omaha won Friday night’s game 2-1 and prevailed Saturday 5-2. The Mavericks are now 8-3-1 overall, and 2-2-0 in the NCHC (good for sixth place in the NCHC, one point behind Colorado College).
Their opponent this weekend, Minnesota Duluth (3-7-3 overall), currently has no conference points. Both teams have played four NCHC games to date.
In the weekly press conference, Coach Mike Gabinet said UMD is better than its record reflects. “Their losses are (to) North Dakota, St. Cloud, and Minnesota, so you know how good they are. They had some early wins and then (faced) a gauntlet of a schedule." He added, “They will be dialed in and ready to go.”
Gabinet noted that with a deep roster, some good Maverick players haven’t been getting much ice time, something that makes his job difficult. “If you don’t sleep, it’s because of lineup decisions.” He noted Charlie Lurie in particular – “(It) was exciting to get his first conference play.” Gabinet added, “Everyone is deserving of play. It’s nice to keep those guys involved. It means there is some good internal competition.”
Special teams play is expected to be a factor this weekend. Minnesota Duluth ranks first in the nation on the power play, while the Mavericks power play finally connected for a goal in the Saturday gave vs. Augustana. “You need special teams to help you put a game away, give you that momentum.”
Graduate student defenseman Dom Vidoli echoed Gabinet’s comments about roster depth. “There's lots of depth from the back end. (There’s) 8 guys that can play. Part of it is being patient and looking for the opportunity,” he said. “When I do get the opportunity, I’m ready to go.”
Vidoli said that Duluth is a “heavy team; they play hard.” He added “They come hard on the forecheck, hard off face-offs.” But, he said, the emphasis will be on what the Mavericks can do, not the Bulldogs. “As long as we stick to our game, we’ll be good. (We need to) stick to our script and play our game.”
He added that having fan support in Sioux Falls was “pretty cool.” He noted the players could hear the cheers. “It was cool to see (the fans) travel; the roads weren’t great. We appreciate that.”
Minnesota Duluth is coming off a bye weekend. Omaha is 15-28-4 all-time against the Bulldogs, with the Mavericks sweeping their last series in Omaha (January 2023).

In the 40-minute episode, you’ll see a breakdown of the Augustana series (with clips), radio legend Terry Leahy being honored for broadcasting his 1000th UNO Hockey game, a discussion about the use of noisemakers and signs at games, and a preview of the Minnesota Duluth series.
Next up: Omaha wraps up the first half of the season with a pair of conference games with St. Cloud State University on Dec. 8-9, at Baxter Arena. Both games will start at 7:07 p.m.
What an unusual weekend at Denver it was! Omaha ended up with a series split (good prediction on the MavPuckCast, Jon!), losing 8-4 on Friday, but winning on Sunday afternoon 4-3 — as the teams finished the game that was suspended for “bad ice” on Saturday night.
UNO Hockey Coach Mike Gabinet achieved his 100th career victory with the win on Sunday as well.
Omaha is now 6-3-1 overall (2-2-0 in NCHC conference play) and is playing its first home-and-home series in more than 10 years, taking on first-year program Augustana University (Sioux Falls, SD) in a home game on Friday night at Baxter Arena and an away game on Saturday night in Sioux Falls at the Denny Sanford Premier Center.
The Mavericks had played home-and-home series with fellow Minnesota State Mankato Mavericks previously, but the most recent home-and-home weekend was held December 2009 (prior to Omaha joining the WCHA in the 2010-11 season).
Gabinet previewed the series by saying, “You can tell by their record they’ve had a lot of success.”
Augustana is 4-5-1 against a high-profile slate that has featured Wisconsin, Denver, and Colorado College already this season. The Vikings had a bye week last weekend.
An emphasis for UNO this week was continuing to work on the power play, which is 0.140 overall (currently sitting at 54 out of 64 D-1 teams in power play percentage).
“The first period on Sunday [at Denver] was the best it [the power play] had looked,” Gabinet said. “We’re continuing to work on it. [We need to] make the smart plays at the right time.”

Next up: Omaha resumes conference play on Dec. 1-2, taking on Minnesota Duluth in Duluth. Friday’s game will be at 7:07 p.m. CT while Saturday’s puck drop is slated for 5:07 p.m. CT.
Coming off a thrilling overtime victory against Western Michigan University in the first series of NCHC play, Omaha is looking to wrap up its 8-game homestand with positive momentum in its non-conference series with LIU.
Omaha is now 3-2-1 overall (1-1-0 in NCHC conference play). The team is just outside the top 20 in the USCHO.com weekly poll (the team would come in at 21 if the poll were extended).
In the weekly press conference, Coach Mike Gabinet said, “How we played the game [versus WMU] was a good blueprint on how to face a really good opponent. [It] showed examples of guys doing the right things on Saturday night.”
Looking ahead to the Sharks, Gabinet said, “It will be a hard match; we will get their best. They played Colorado College to a one-goal game.” He noted that LIU is “big, heavy, and competitive” but said the Mavericks will “keep bringing the focus back to ourselves.”
Sophomore defenseman Griffin Ludtke was named the NCHC Defenseman of the Week for his three-point weekend (1G, 2A). Ludtke emphasized the work that the players have been doing through the offseason and the early weeks of the season to prepare. He referenced the disappointment of how the 2022-23 season ended and working with Nolan Sullivan and Jacob Slipec during the summer, effort that Gabinet lauded when asked about him. “Your weeks and days matter,” Ludtke said.
Ludtke lit up when asked about playing with his younger brother, freshman forward Tanner Ludtke. “It’s great playing with ‘T.’ He’s adjusting super well to college.” Griffin said Tanner is his best friend and he’s enjoying sharing the locker room with him. He also noted that his “Mom and Dad are excited to have [them in] one spot,” adding that he thinks he’s only played a handful of games without at least one parent in attendance.
Griffin said that the Sharks “will definitely give us a challenge.” He noted that “It’s going to be about us again, as it is with every opponent.”
Long Island University’s website lists the team as 4-5-0, although that includes an Oct. 28 win over Saint Anselm, which is not a Division 1 program. The Mavericks and the Sharks last met in Long Island Oct. 28-29, 2022. Omaha is 4-0 all-time against LIU, including 2-1 and 7-1 victories in last year’s series.
For Fans Attending the Games in Person:

Theme Nights:
Friday night is Military Appreciation Night, sponsored by WoodmenLife. The team is expected to wear Military Appreciation jerseys, which are being auctioned off online:
Both games will be broadcast live on 1290 AM and on The Varsity Network app. Pre-game coverage begins 30 minutes prior to face off with the FNBO Pre-Game Show. “Voice of the Mavs” Mike Vaillancourt will have the play-by-play, with color commentary provided by Terry Leahy.

In the 34-minute episode, Jon and Bridget recap the WMU series, plus some “Things You Missed at Baxter Arena” (#oldbull Greg Zanon was honored), UNO Giving Day (“Wear Black, Give Back”), and a preview of the Long Island University series.
Next up: Omaha finally heads out on the road, taking on current top-ranked Denver University in Denver, Nov. 17-18. Friday night’s game is at 8 p.m. Central; Saturday night’s game will start at 7 p.m. Central.
Omaha Hockey opens up NCHC conference play on Nov. 3-4 after a disappointing tie (shootout loss) and loss to Ohio State at Baxter Arena on Oct. 27-28. Omaha (2-1-1) has dropped out of the top 20 in the USCHO.com weekly poll, although the team is still receiving votes. WMU is currently ranked 11 in the poll.
In the weekly press conference, Head Coach Mike Gabinet said the team was excited to open up conference play against the no. 11 team in the nation. “Guys get up for every game, but especially against ranked teams.”
Gabinet said the Broncos are “big, heavy, and fast” and have a high potent offense. “They like to forecheck hard.”
He added that the Mavericks “deserved a win” out of last weekend’s games, but that they would “keep progressing and keep going.” He said the team’s motto is “Keep showing up and doing the work.”
Assistant Captain Jack Randl said the team is excited to get into conference play. “We want to get off to a good start,” he said. “Every point is so huge, and we definitely want to finish as high as we can.”
He echoed Coach Gabinet’s statements about the team’s resilience. “We’re going to battle some adversity this year. We played two pretty good games, but didn’t get the results. We’re going to keep playing our game.”
The Mavericks are hoping to get graduate defenseman Dom Vidoli back in the lineup this weekend after he was out for the Ohio State series.
Western Michigan is 3-0-1 on the season and is scoring just under five goals on average per game (4.8 GPG). The Broncos also have a top-ranked power play (44.4%), while Omaha’s is ranked 52nd in the nation. The Mavericks have been perfect on the penalty kill, however, holding opponents to no goals on 13 penalties.
Omaha and Western met four times during the 2022-23 season, with Omaha sweeping Western in Omaha and splitting in Kalamazoo. WMU advanced to the NCAA tournament last season for the second year in a row.
The all-time series is 34-25-6 in favor of Omaha, and 18-8-2 in games in Omaha.

Next up: The final two games of the four-series homestand at Baxter Arena wrap up when Omaha takes on LIU on Friday, Nov. 10 (7:07 p.m.) and Saturday, Nov. 11 (7:07 p.m.)
Following a “revenge sweep” of Niagara to open a four weekend homestand at Baxter Arena, the Mavericks next face off with the Buckeyes of Ohio State on Oct. 27-28. Currently Omaha is ranked no. 20 in the USCHO.com weekly poll, and Ohio State is ranked no. 16.
Omaha had a bye week last weekend, allowing the players a little more time for recovery and a little more time with video, Associate Coach Peter Aubry noted in the weekly press conference. Assistant captain Matt Miller will hopefully be back in the lineup after missing the Saturday game of the Niagara series.
Aubry assessed the Ohio State squad, saying they are "pretty well rounded and pretty hard-nosed. Good defensively through the middle.” He noted the Buckeyes bounced back well last Saturday night (2-2 tie with a shootout win) after being beaten by Michigan 7-1 on Friday.
Defenseman Kirby Proctor echoed Coach Aubry, saying Ohio State is a “good team, but we’re trying to make this weekend about us.” He said the team is “focused on the process” and “doing the right things.” Proctor said the bye week was “nice to continue to build on concepts and things like that while we had some time.” He added it allowed for “some rest and recovery [to be able to] take care of our bodies early in the year.”
Highlighting the importance of non-conference games in setting the team up for post-season play, Proctor said the team wants to “represent the conference well. It affects the Pairwise. Every out-of-conference weekend is big.”
For “vintage Mavericks,” the head coach of the Buckeyes is familiar. Steve Rohlik was an original (“oldbull”) member of the Maverick coaching staff when the program started in 1997. He was on the UNO staff for three years before joining Minnesota-Duluth in 2000. He was elevated to the Ohio State head coach role in 2013.
Ohio State is 2-1-2 on the year. Omaha is 2-0-0.
Ohio State and Omaha were together in the CCHA for 11 seasons. Omaha leads Ohio State in the all-time series, 18-14-5, including 11-3-3 in Omaha. In their most recent matchup — in Columbus Oct. 18-19, 2019 — the teams split, with Ohio State taking the first game 3-2 and Omaha taking the second game 2-1.
In our previous series preview, we noted that “Offense will be the question mark for Omaha in this series.” That question was answered somewhat in Friday night’s game, when eight different Mavericks scored (Tanner Ludtke, Zach Urdahl, Dominic Vidoli, Ray Fust, Nolan Sullivan, Joaquim Lemay, Tyler Rollwagen, and Jesse Lansdell) in the 8-1 victory. Saturday’s 2-1 victory saw goals from Griffin Ludtke and Lemay.
Goaltenders Simon Latkoczy and Seth Eisele split duties during the Niagara series, with Latkoczy getting the start on Friday and Eisele on Saturday. It will be interesting to see if that trend continues, or if a successful Friday outing for Latkoczy results in him starting both games. The coaching staff has had a penchant for sticking with a goalie (after a successful Friday performance) in key series against ranked opponents.
For Fans Attending the Games in Person:
There are some new parking changes this year. The west lot outside Baxter, Lot 25, is now open to donors only and parking passes are required to park in that lot. The north lot, Lot 27, offers free parking on a first-come, first-served basis, as is Lot 26 (west of the arena, across the creek).
With colder temperatures expected, fans should arrive early to avoid crowds, especially at the west entrance. Have digital tickets ready to scan in the Mavericks app (or add them from your MyMavs account to your phone’s wallet app). If you have questions, stop by the box office at Baxter Arena before the game or call 402-554-MAVS.
The clear bag policy remains in effect at Baxter Arena, and metal detectors are now at all entrances.
Theme Nights:
Friday night is 90s Night. Fans are encouraged to wear 90s apparel. Saturday night will feature trick-or-treating in the arena concourse from 6:07 to 7 p.m. This weekend is also Parent’s Weekend, and the players and parents will be on the ice before the game on Saturday, so show up early!
> Saturday, 7:07 p.m. CT (Game sponsor: Rotella’s Italian Bakery)
Radio:
Both games will be broadcast live on 1290 AM and on The Varsity Network app. Pre-game coverage begins 30 minutes prior to face off with the FNBO Pre-Game Show. “Voice of the Mavs” Mike Vaillancourt will have the play-by-play, with color commentary provided by Terry Leahy.
Also check out episode 3 of the sixth season of the “MavPuckCast with Jason and Jon.” In this 45-minute episode, Jon and Jason review the sweep over Niagara as well as some of the “Things You Missed at Baxter Arena” and a discussion of ticketing glitches. They also preview this week’s series with Ohio State and provide their predictions for the series.
Next up: The homestand continues as Omaha faces its first conference foe of the season when they take on Western Michigan on Friday, Nov. 3 (7:07 p.m.) and Saturday, Nov. 4 (7:07 p.m.) at Baxter Arena. It will be Homecoming weekend too!
In the first of four home series to open the 2023-24 season, Omaha will face Niagara in a pair of non-conference games on Friday, Oct. 13 and Saturday, Oct. 14.
Omaha is looking for revenge for the Niagara series last season when the Purple Eagles swept Omaha 4-3 in a pair of games at Baxter Arena. (Is it odd that both of these non-conference series were in Omaha? Usually we play a series there, and a series here. Hmm.) Several pundits traced Omaha missing the NCAA tournament last year to this series, and the players interviewed at the weekly news conferences have alluded to the need for a strong non-conference showing to start the season off on the right foot. The 2022 series also represents the last time that Omaha was swept at home.
In the pre-series press conference, head coach Mike Gabinet reiterated the importance of the series. "No one is taking these games for granted. We’re committed to bring our best effort come Friday and Saturday night.”
Junior forward Ty Mueller echoed the sentiment. “Looking back at it, [that series] kind of ruined our whole season in a way. So I think it’s super important that we come out remembering that and make sure we play this game like our season depends on it and make sure we win both [games] this weekend.”
Niagara leads Omaha in the all-time series, 6-3-1.
Offense will be the question mark for Omaha in this series. The team lost five of its top 10 point producers from last season, although top performers senior Matt Miller and graduate students Jack Randl and Nolan Sullivan return.
Goaltenders Simon Latkoczy and Seth Eisele split time in the net during last weekend’s exhibition game at MSU Mankato, combining to turn aside 38 shots and keeping the Purple Mavericks scoreless. Latkoczy is expected to get the start in net on Friday.
For Fans Attending the Games in Person:
A couple of key changes await fans at Baxter Arena in the 2023-24 season. The first is that one parking option has changed. The west lot outside Baxter, Lot 25, is now open to donors only and parking passes will be required to park in that lot. The north lot, Lot 27, offers free parking on a first-come, first-served basis, as is Lot 26 (west of the arena, across the creek).
The second change is that the venue has added metal detectors at all entrances. Fans should allow a few extra minutes for entry as staff and fans adjust to this new change. In addition, fans can no longer print tickets from their MyMavs account, so be prepared to access your digital tickets in your Mavericks app or add them from your MyMavs account to your phone’s wallet app. Note that the digital tickets will not have a barcode. Some fans have reported trouble with these processes, so test it before coming to the arena. If you have questions, call 402-554-MAVS or visit the box office at Baxter Arena.
Both games will be broadcast live on 1290 AM. Pre-game coverage begins 30 minutes prior to face off with the FNBO Pre-Game Show. New “Voice of the Mavs” Mike Vaillancourt will have the play-by-play, with color commentary provided by Terry Leahy.
Also check out episode 2 of the sixth season of the “MavPuckCast with Jason and Jon.” This 35-minute episode features Jon and Jason talking about the exhibition game in Mankato, a look at the MSU Mankato arena, UNO’s upcoming appearance in the 2024 Ice Breaker Tournament in Las Vegas, and their predictions and a preview of the series with the Purple Eagles.
Next up: The Mavericks get an early bye week and then the homestead continues as Omaha faces another non-conference foe (and an #oldbull coach, Steve Rohlik) when they take on Ohio State, Friday, Oct. 27 (7:07 p.m.) and Saturday, Oct. 28 (7:07 p.m.) at Baxter Arena.
