Series Preview: Omaha vs. Colorado College, Jan. 10-11, 2025

Omaha Hockey (8-10-0, 4-4-0 in conference) will face No. 13/14 Colorado College (10-7-1, 4-3-1 in conference) in the first NCHC conference series of the second half of the 2024-25 hockey season after finishing as runners-up in the 2025 Coachella Valley Cactus Cup last weekend in Palm Desert, California.

The Tigers started out the season hot, but have lost five of their last six games. They were swept by Augustana last weekend in Colorado Springs. (Omaha was also swept by Augustana earlier this season.)

Colorado College has a “scoring by committee” offense this season. Eleven Tigers have at least seven points this season. The team’s leading scorer is graduate transfer defenseman Ty Gallagher with 13 points (4 goals, 9 assists). The Tigers roster features nine players who are NHL draft picks.

Omaha’s leading scorer is graduate forward Sam Stange. Stange has 8 goals and 5 assists on the season. Fellow Wisconsin native Zach Urdahl has 7 goals and 3 assists, while junior forward Cam Mitchell is third on the team in points with 5 goals and 3 assists. (All five of Mitchell’s goals were scored in the last 8 games, including last Friday’s game-winning goal in overtime against Holy Cross.)

Mitchell was the featured player at the weekly press conference on Jan. 8. He appeared in 13 games for the Mavericks during the 2023-24 season, recording just a single assist. “The coaching staff and I had a long chat of just finding my game and finding that identity piece of my game,” Mitchell said.

Omaha has a 30-15-7 advantage in the series against the Tigers. The Mavs are 16-5-5 versus Colorado College in Omaha.

The teams played two series during the season last year. This is the only scheduled matchup for the two teams this season.

During the regular season series at Baxter Arena last year, Omaha won the first game 3-0 and tied the Tigers 1-1 in the series finale.

The Mavericks went on the road to Colorado Springs for the first round of the NCHC playoffs, coming back to win a best-of-3 series to advance to the team’s first-ever Frozen Faceoff appearance at the XCel Energy Center in St. Paul.

A close contest wouldn’t be much of a surprise... 12 of Colorado College’s games this season have been decided by one goal or less.

“We know we’ll get a good team coming here this weekend,” Coach Gabinet said at this week’s press conference.

Special teams will likely be a factor: The Tigers are 10th in the nation on the penalty kill (87.9%). Opponents are 2-for-22 on the power play in the last seven games versus the Tigers.

The Mavericks’ power play has been anemic as of late. The team went 0-for-9 on the power play during the Cactus Cup and allowed 3 power play goals.

Gabinet said the coaches continue to tweak the power play. “Coach Dave Noel-Bernier kind of revamped things a little bit even more this week. When it’s struggling like that, it’s good to look at it and make changes and keep trying new things and new combinations of personnel to try to get a jump start.”

Mitchell said the Cactus Cup experience was good for the team. “We always talk about good teams always finding a way to win. You know, hard games and close games. We found a way down the stretch to get it done. So that was a big momentum thing for us as a group for the rest of the year and for that weekend.”

He said the series should be exciting. “We’re building up a pretty good rivalry with them. Every time we play them, they’re usually pretty close and hard games.”

“We got the right guys, and we got the right game plan as well,” Mitchell said. “I think as long as we execute our game plan, and we want it more than we should, we’ll be able to get the job done.”

Fun Fact: Colorado College head coach Kris Mayotte was an assistant coach at Providence College when the Friars beat the Omaha Hockey team 4-1 in the Frozen Four semifinals in 2015.

Series Preview: Omaha vs. Lindenwood, Dec. 13-14, 2024

Omaha Hockey is back at Baxter Arena for one more (non-conference) series before the holiday break. The Mavericks will face the Lindenwood Lions for the first time ever after splitting a series with St. Cloud State University on the road last weekend. Omaha is 6-8-0 (4-4-0 in the NCHC). The Lions are 3-12-1 overall but have faced some tough opponents so far, including No. 9 Wisconsin (4-2 win, 2-3 OT loss), No. 1 Denver (lost 4-1 both games), No. 14 Ohio State (lost 5-2 and 3-2), and No. 1 Michigan State (lost 4-0, and 2-0).

“They’re a good hockey team and have played an extremely hard schedule so far,” said Coach Mike Gabinet. “Any time you get to come in and play at a NCHC team or a Big Ten team … that’s kind of like your playoffs. They beat Wisconsin, [lost] 2-0 to Michigan State. These are good teams. These are top ten teams, top five teams in some situations. So you know you’re going to get their best. So I think that’s really important to make sure you bring your best as well.”

Reflecting on the SCSU series, Gabinet said, “I really liked four periods out of the six (last) weekend. Even Saturday, our first period was one of maybe our most complete periods. I think it is important for us to continue to learn and grow from playing those top-tier opponents.”

Gabinet said the team is looking to finish the first half of the season strong before the holiday break.

“We know there are no easy games, and we know how hard these guys play,” Gabinet added.

He praised the play of forward Sam Stange. “I think he’s been one of our best players, to be honest. You can see his confidence growing [from] when we first got him to where he is now. He continues to take steps in that direction, learning to use his skill and his size,” he said. “I know he didn’t play much at Wisconsin last season, but we were hopeful that he could take a step here and develop and grow, and he’s done exactly that.”

Gabinet also praised freshman defenseman Marcus Broberg. “I think he’s growing. He can really skate out there. He’s not a huge guy, but he’s a very competitive individual. He’s a guy that wasn’t good enough at the start of the year to play. We had a conversation with him and just told him what we’re seeing and what needs to improve,” he said. “He’s an up-and-coming young defenseman with the team and doing well.”

Senior forward Zach Urdahl gave his thoughts on the first half of the season. “We have had some ups and downs. I think every day we seem to be getting a little bit better. We’re a process-driven team, so [we’re] just trying to focus on every weekend getting a little bit better every day.”

Talking about the Lindenwood series, “They have played a lot of good teams, and played close games with good teams. So [we just need to] make sure that we’re ready for them. They’re gonna play hard, they’re gonna play fast, we gotta make sure [we] match that,” he said.

"It’s pretty important that we go out and get two wins this weekend,“ Urdahl added.

After the series, the team will have a brief break (starting Sunday). “It can be hard to not look past the weekend, obviously, to get to go home,“ Urdahl said. “There’s a lot of excitement to be able to get a little rest and go home and spend time with your family and your friends for the holidays. It’s important that we focus on the two games in hand. It’s important that we stay focused, and we don’t get ahead of ourselves.”

Introducing the 2024-25 Omaha Hockey Captains

Omaha hockey head coach Mike Gabinet announced the program's leadership group for the 2024-25 season. Graduate student defenseman Nolan Krenzen will don the “C” as the 25th captain in program history. Krenzen, the inaugural recipient of the Menke Family Captain’s Scholarship, will be joined by graduate student forward Harrison Israels (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada/Alaska Fairbanks), junior defenseman Griffin Ludtke (Elko, Minn./Sioux City) and graduate student forward Sam Stange (Eau Claire, Wis./Wisconsin) to round-out the Mavericks' leadership group.

Nolan Krenzen and our entire leadership group have earned this honor and responsibility,” said head coach Mike Gabinet. “With their actions, encouraging words and play on the ice, I have no doubt this group will do a remarkable job and continue to set the standard of what it means to wear an Omaha sweater and represent our program. This group epitomizes our Maverick mindset, core values as a program and will play a huge role in achieving our goals for the season.”

Krenzen scored two goals in 40 games last season for Omaha. The blueliner notched eight assists for 10 points with 27 total shots. Krenzen has appeared in 125 games for Omaha over the past four seasons and has been named to the NCHC Academic All-Conference and a Distinguished Scholar three times in his career.

A newcomer to Omaha this season, Israels was the leading goalscorer for Alaska Fairbanks last season, lighting the lamp 20 times in 2023-24. Playing in 33 of the 34 Fairbanks contests, he was tied for second on the team in points with 27. The centerman closed out the season on a five-game point streak where he produced four goals and added one assist. Israels served as the Nanooks’ captain for the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons.

Ludtke returns to Omaha for his third season as a Maverick. He scored four goals for the Mavericks last season in 40 games played. The Elko, Minn. native recorded 23 helpers for 27 points with one game-winning score and one goal on the man-advantage.

A 2020 NHL fourth round draft pick, Sam Stange joins the Mavericks this season after totaling 13 goals and 16 assists for 29 points at Wisconsin. Stange has three multi-point games under his belt including a two-goal performance against Penn State his freshman season. During his junior campaign, he logged points in four of five contests against Michigan, Minnesota and Lake Superior State.

The Mavericks had a complete turnover of team leadership after the 2023-24 season as Captain Nolan Sullivan and Assistant Captain Jack Randl completed their eligibility and Assistant Captain Matt Miller departed the team to pursue a professional hockey career.

Menke Family Captain’s Scholarship To Support Omaha Hockey

The family of Brandon M. Menke, M.D., has established the Menke Family Captain’s Scholarship for the captain of the Omaha Hockey program. This is the first position-specific scholarship for any sport within Omaha Athletics.

The investment in the Maverick Hockey program will assist Omaha Hockey head coach Mike Gabinet in recruiting and retaining prospective student-athletes who excel on the rink and demonstrate excellent leadership qualities. The scholarship will be in place for five years.

“I’m grateful to the Menke family for their investment in our program and our student-athletes,” Gabinet said. “Their gift demonstrates to our players just how much Maverick fans care about the success of this team and its players, on and off the ice. The team captain is a difference-maker for our hockey program, and I’m pleased to have this as a named position.”

Dr. Menke made a generous gift commitment through the University of Nebraska Foundation to establish the full scholarship. The amount of the gift is not being disclosed at the donor’s request.

He is a partner and ophthalmologist at Ilumin Eye Center in Omaha and a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve. His wife, Dr. Kristen Menke, is a psychologist at Omaha Integrative Care. The couple has two daughters, Sloane and Blaire.

“To me, a great captain is not someone who scores the most goals or most assists but rather helps others achieve their goals to help the team as a whole,” Dr. Menke said. “A captain does not care who scores the winning goal as long as the team wins. A captain is a leader.”

He said he grew up playing hockey and loves the sport. He brought older daughter Sloane to her first hockey game when she was just 2 years old, and now younger daughter Blaire attends games, too. Maverick Hockey has become a family affair.

Dr. Menke said he hopes the family’s gift will inspire others to support the Maverick Hockey program.

“The close community and small college feel that UNO has, coupled with great hockey, made for the perfect match for my family to connect to,” he said. “My wife’s parents and my parents also instilled a mindset of giving back and philanthropy. Whether it be time, money or simply caring, giving back is what helps anything succeed.”

The inaugural recipient of the Menke Family Captain’s Scholarship will be announced by fall 2024. The scholarship can be renewed if the recipient continues to serve as team captain and is in good academic standing. The gift was made as part of Only in Nebraska: A Campaign for Our University’s Future. The campaign is a historic effort to engage 150,000 benefactors to give $3 billion to support University of Nebraska students, faculty, academic and clinical programs and research to address the needs of the state. Scholarships are a top priority of the campaign.

“We are so grateful to the Menke family for their incredible generosity in support of Maverick Hockey student-athletes,” Vice Chancellor/Director of Athletics Adrian Dowell said. “The momentum of our hockey program is exciting and made possible by an incredible fanbase and donors like the Menke family.

First-Ever Frozen Faceoff: Omaha vs. North Dakota in the Semi-Final, March 22, 2024

I was 27 the last time Omaha made it to a neutral site conference semi-final. Jon was 28. Mike Gabinet was a freshman on Coach Mike Kemp’s team that year. That tells you how long ago it was.

But here we are. It’s March 22, 2024 and Omaha is playing in its first-ever NCHC Frozen Faceoff. #SomedayOmaha is #TodayOmaha.

(The #SomedayOmaha tagline is an inspirational one … and was always meant to be. Like #WeBelieve from the early years of the program. If you weren’t alive or an Omaha Hockey fan back then, you may not “get it” — but when Jon and I attended our first Frozen Faceoff back in March 2019, we believed that Omaha would make it someday. We believed it was possible. So Jon designed a MavPuck shirt for Lawlor’s with the #SomedayOmaha tagline … and here we are. Believe it and you can achieve it.)

Anyway, we’re here now. And how did Omaha get here? The hard way. On the road, as a five seed playing four seed Colorado College at Ed Robson Arena in Colorado Springs. The Mavs were less than a minute away from a win on Friday night (Game 1) when Colorado College tied it 3-3. The Tigers won that game in overtime.

Saturday night (Game 2) was a new night. This time, the Mavs wouldn’t be beaten. Not with their season on the line. The series was now tied 1-1, with a decisive St. Patrick’s Day (night) game to advance one team to the Frozen Faceoff.

Behind a third night of stellar play from Simon Latkoczy, Omaha pulled off the upset and its first-ever trip to St. Paul.

But what awaits the Mavericks in the first game of the Frozen Faceoff is a familiar opponent — North Dakota. The two teams will square off for the fifth time this season, the 60th matchup overall. Omaha ended the regular season with a historic sweep of the Fighting Hawks at Baxter Arena — sweeping at two-game series against UND for the first time ever.

Omaha is 22-11-4 this season. North Dakota is 26-10-2.

Key stats:

  • The first team to score has won 28 of 32 matchups.
  • Omaha is 16-2 in one-goal games this season.

Coach Gabinet has done three press conferences this week in anticipation of the Frozen Faceoff. The first was an NCHC press conference by Zoom earlier this week.

USCHO’s Matt Semisch asked Gabinet about his “recipe for success” this season.

Gabinet responded, “I think we’ve (done) a really good job of just staying present and trying to find ways to keep improving every single weekend…and it’s really paid off for us down the stretch.”

I asked Captain Nolan Sullivan about playing at the “X.”

“Growing up in Minnesota, it’s always a dream to win the state (high school hockey) tournament. And for myself, I got to play there all three years of high school, which is pretty special to do that with the same guys who (you) grew up playing with your whole career,” Sullivan said. “I know the Minnesota guys are pretty juiced to get back in it and excited to play in front of so many family and friends.”

Sullivan said a key to success against North Dakota would be to "just stick to our identity. And that’s just making it hard on teams, making them earn everything they get.”

He said the grind of the NCHC has given the team confidence. “I think there’s definitely that confidence with the team, the group that we can go toe-to-toe with anybody in the country, that we deserve to be where we’re at for a reason. We’ve proved it kind of week after week now at this point,” Sullivan added.

Junior forward Zach Urdahl took questions at the Mavericks’ regular weekly press conference.

When asked about facing North Dakota for a fifth time this season, Urdahl said, “I think nothing changes for us. As a group, we stick to what we’ve been doing … stick to our game plan, our systems. I think a big thing is everyone’s bought into those right now. Everyone’s on the same page. Everyone’s playing their role perfectly really, and so it’s just about doing what we can do, focusing on us.”

In the same press conference, Gabinet talked about facing North Dakota for a fifth time. “Success is always a good thing. You just (have) to look at the things that we did well in those series and the things we needed to get better at and just keep improving and keep building on the strengths and improving on the weaknesses.”

He said the NCHC has prepared the team for this moment. “It’s just constantly getting punched in the face a little bit, and we talk about just punching back all the time. I think that’s the mentality of the group — you know you’re going to take some punches, but as long as you keep fighting back, that’s what matters.”

Series Preview: Omaha vs. Colorado College, Feb. 23-24, 2024

It’s another Top 20 matchup at Baxter Arena this weekend as the #19 Omaha Mavericks welcome #10 Colorado College to Baxter Arena for a pair of games.

The Tigers are red hot following a decisive sweep of #2 North Dakota last weekend (and taking all four games from the Fighting Hawks this season). Omaha (15-10-3 overall, 8-8-2 in the NCHC) is coming off a bye weekend after splitting with Western Michigan (Friday loss 6-1, Saturday overtime win 3-2) Feb. 9-10 on the road. Colorado College has won eight of their last nine games. They are 18-9-1 overall and 12-6-0 in the NCHC.

This is the only meeting of the Mavericks and Tigers during the 2023-24 regular season. The Tigers last played at Baxter Arena on Feb. 10-11, 2023.

The weekly press conference was held shortly after hockey program founder Mike Kemp announced his upcoming retirement.

Coach Gabinet, who was recruited by and played for Kemp, reflected on his relationship with him. “He recruited me as an 18-year-old out of Canada, and if you had asked me where, 28 or 25 years later, where I’d be now … I owe everything to Coach Kemp,” Gabinet said. “Coming back to Omaha and being here and getting recruited here, he’s a special person in my life and a special person to the program.”

“From coaching to administration to building, he’s done it all,” Gabinet added.

Previewing the Colorado College series, Gabinet said he’s excited. “We’re ready to go and excited for the challenge ahead of us this weekend.”

“Colorado College is a patient team. They like to sit back and be a little bit patient for their opportunities. You have to be smart against them and manage the puck properly and wait for your opportunities. I think it will be a fun series,” he added.

When asked about the overtime win in Kalamazoo prior to the bye week, Gabinet responded, “I think when you start to play a little bit fearlessly — but not recklessly — that’s when you play your best. [Our guys aren’t] gripping their sticks tight, they’re not overly worried about the outcome, they’re just focused on staying in that moment and playing to the best of their abilities.”

Junior defenseman Victor Mancini echoed Gabinet’s excitement about the series. “It’s going to be a challenge for sure, but I think at the same time that’s really exciting for us — for them to come into our building, we’re going to have the home ice advantage and I think we’re playing good hockey too coming into these games.”

“It's going to be fun, it's going to be loud. I think we got something to prove coming into these games, so it’s a good team to play against and try to get these points,” Mancini added.

“They have a lot of really good forwards, so it’s going to be a challenge, but I take pride in that and try to shut down their forwards,” he said. "Sticking to our game plan — and pre-scouts that our coaches put together — and knowing a little bit of their tendencies will go a long way.”

Mancini said he played with CC netminder Kaiden Mbereko in their younger days. “We actually grew up playing together, so I won’t say there’s any keys to beating him. He’s a pretty good goalie, so it’s going to be tough. That’s also going to be a big challenge for us, but sticking with things – getting shots on him early, not giving up any grade A [opportunities], and just kind of sticking with things. He’s going to come out and he’s going to make some big saves, so not letting us get discouraged from that I think will be big.”

Here’s the video of Coach Kemp’s portion of the press conference, responding to media inquiries to his retirement announcement:
