Series Preview: Omaha at Denver, Jan. 31-Feb. 1, 2025

By Bridget Brooks

The Omaha Hockey team has won six straight and is headed to Colorado to try to make it eight straight. The Mavericks are taking on the defending national champions in Denver on Friday, Jan. 31 and Saturday, Feb. 1. It is the only regular season games scheduled between the two teams this season.

No. 5 Denver is currently tied for fourth place in the NCHC with North Dakota. Omaha is in second place, one point out of first place (behind Western Michigan).

Omaha is averaging 2.9 goals a game (while holding opponents to 2.2 goals/game). Denver is scoring an average of 3.8 goals a game and holding opponents to 2 goals/game. Something has to give.

Junior goaltender Simon Latkoczy, fresh off his third NCHC Goaltender of the Week honors, is expected to get the start in net. Latkoczy has a 2.22 goals against average this season, with a .935 save percentage. He is on the Mike Richter Award watch list and is a Hobey Baker candidate. He recorded his 40th and 41st career victories against the SCSU Huskies.

Nine players have played all 24 games for the Mavericks this season: Brock Bremer (F), Dylan Gratton (D), Jacob Guevin (D), Harrison Israels (F), captain Nolan Krenzen (D), Griffin Ludtke (D), Brady Risk (F), Tyler Rollwagen (F), and Sam Stange (F). Eight of the nine had points in last weekend’s series versus St. Cloud State (all except Gratton).

Denver is 18-6-0 overall (7-5-0 in NCHC play), and are coming off a split with Minnesota-Duluth in Duluth last weekend. The Pioneers lost 4-3 on Friday, with sophomore goaltender Freddie Halyk getting his second start of the season. Denver won 2-1 Saturday behind the play of senior goaltender Matt Davis (in Coach David Carle’s 250th game as the boss bench for DU).

Friday night at Magness Arena the UNO Alumni Association will host a “Mavs on the Move” event.

Omaha is 14-10-0 overall, and 10-4-0 in the NCHC. Omaha swept St. Cloud in Omaha, winning 6-3 on Friday and 3-1 on Saturday.

Last season, Denver won the season series with Omaha three games to one, splitting in Denver (winning 8-4 Friday, losing to Omaha on Sunday 4-3 after the Saturday night game was delayed to Sunday afternoon due to a problem with the ice), and sweeping the Mavericks 6-3 and 6-2 at Baxter Arena last season.

The Pioneers are 9-2-0 at Magness Arena this season.

Captain Nolan Krenzen and Coach Mike Gabinet met with the media ahead of the Denver series.

“We’ve made a choice on what our heart is going to be. Winning is hard, losing is hard. The group has made (the) hard choice to show up,” Krenzen said. “When things are going wrong, you can try and blame it on something, or you just have to stay consistent and keep showing up.”

Krenzen said fan and family support have been important to the team this season. “There’s (so) many people, and they’re loud, and the atmosphere is hard for other teams to come in (and play in), and it’s awesome for us.”

“I have the privilege to see my parents pretty much every weekend. Not a lot of players can say that, so I try (not) to take it for granted, because I know eventually that won’t be the case,” he added.

He said Denver is “obviously very offensively skilled (and) they have good structure. But ultimately, it’s our game and what we need to focus on. And I think if we stay committed to our structure and our game plan, we’ll do well.”

Krenzen said he doesn’t look at the standings. “It might be in the back of your mind, but it’s not the main focus. It’s good to have goals as a team, but this late in the season, I think it’s just about us and the way we want to play and show up.”

He said he will do whatever he can to help the team. “I don’t like to get scored on. That’s the one thing — if I get scored on the ice, that’s not a good game for me, if that happens a lot. So that’s what I like to focus on. I think that helps, ultimately, the team win, if I can play that way. So that’s what I strive to do.”

Coach Gabinet had high praise for his captain. “He’s just a stand-up individual, (a) high character person. Hockey aside, he does the right things consistently. (He’s) very low maintenance to coach … just takes care of himself on ice, takes care of himself off the ice, does extra … always in shape … always prepared.”

Gabinet says offensive production will be important in the upcoming series. “We harped on defense a lot early in the year knowing that we can’t afford to give up too many goals against, and now it’s been nice to focus a little bit more on offensive development,“ Gabinet said. “Even in practice, you can see guys getting better on both sides of the puck. (It’s been) nice to see some of those guys really find their offensive mojo in the second half (of the season).”

Series Preview: Omaha vs. St. Cloud State University, Jan. 24-25, 2025

Omaha Hockey (12-10-0, 8-4-0 in the NCHC) will face No. 17 St. Cloud State University (11-11-0, 4-8-0 in conference) on Jan. 24-25 at Baxter Arena in their second matchup of the 2024-25 season.

The last time the two teams met was in St. Cloud, Minn., with the Mavericks winning 4-3 in overtime on Friday, and the Huskies taking the 5-2 victory on Saturday night to split the series.

St. Cloud is on a four-game losing streak, having been swept by Minnesota-Duluth in Duluth 2-0 and 5-2, and being swept by Arizona State in St. Cloud 6-3 and 5-3 last weekend.

Omaha is on a four-game winning streak, sweeping Colorado College at Baxter Arena before sweeping Miami in Oxford, Ohio last weekend. Omaha had six different goal-scorers last weekend, and nine players with assists. The Mavericks are currently third in the NCHC with 23 points.

SCSU leads the all-time series with Omaha 30-18-4. Omaha is 5-4-1 in the last 10 matchups.

Junior defenseman Jacob Guevin and Omaha Hockey head coach Mike Gabinet met with the media to preview the series.

SCSU is outscoring its opponents in the first two periods. “That’s really important to start on time and making sure you’re prepared appropriately to make sure that you’re doing the things right off the bat and not taking time to get into the game,” Gabinet said.

He said Omaha and SCSU are similar. “We’re a little bit similar in how we play the game and our structure,” Gabinet said. “We always know [it’s] going to be a hard-fought battle against them. They compete hard, they’re disciplined. We’re prepared for them. And it should be a good series.”

Gabinet praised several defensive players, including junior transfer Dylan Gratton, named KJ Branding NCHC Player of the Week. “Nice to see him step up and have a really big impact on both games.”

On Isaiah Norlin: “He’s a guy that can really make things happen offensively. He’s a dangerous player with [the] puck, in a positive way. I think he’s got a chance to be a really, really good player — and he’s working towards that now — and it’s been fun to watch him develop and continue to grow.”

On Jacob Guevin: “He’s a big-time worker. He really competes hard in practice every day, and he puts the work in necessary to be good come the weekend time. From day one, he’s been not only doing well offensively, but defending hard, being very competitive out there, eating some big minutes for us, and just [continuing] to develop.”

Guevin attributed his success this season to “growing and opportunities.”

“Coming in as a freshman, I had some stuff to learn, and I got to get better, get stronger, so I think I did my part, and then opportunities also came along the way,” Guevin said. “So I think this year I’m playing a little bigger role. And yeah, it’s been nice to see some results along the way for sure.”

Looking ahead to this weekend, Guevin said “I think it’s fun to play St. Cloud. They have a good team this year, for sure. They’re in a tough stretch right now, but they’re going to come out hard.”

“We have plenty of confidence right now, and we’re just gonna try to keep winning some hockey games,” he added.

Series Preview: Omaha at Miami (OH), Jan. 17-18, 2025

By Bridget Brooks

After sweeping conference foe Colorado College, Omaha Hockey is back on the road again, traveling to Oxford, OH to take on the Miami RedHawks.

The RedHawks have struggled in conference play, generating a single point in a tie (overtime loss) to St. Cloud on Nov. 8. They have been swept in conference series with Minnesota Duluth, Omaha, North Dakota, and Denver. Miami's overall record is 3-15-2 and 0-10-0 in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC). In Denver last weekend, Miami lost 4-1 on Friday and 6-2 on Saturday.

Omaha is 10-10-0 (6-4-0 in NCHC play). The team’s most recent series came against Colorado College at Baxter Arena on Jan. 10-12. The Mavs swept the Tigers 5-2 and 3-1.

Graduate forward Harrison Israels met with the media ahead of the series with the RedHawks. Israels, a transfer from Alaska, is pursuing his MBA at Omaha.

Asked about the sweep of Colorado College and the momentum it provides the team, Israels said, “We’ve had some ups and downs, but I think just the way our team has continued to build, it really showcases that.”

“That was some of our best hockey all year,” he added. “So I think it’s a good confidence builder for us as a group, and especially heading into a big weekend against Miami.”

He said the team isn’t taking the RedHawks lightly, despite their record. “I think the biggest thing in college is — any given night, anybody can beat anyone,” Israels said. “Every team in this league is good, and Miami’s got a lot of talent on their team.”

“We (have) to be focused. We (have) to be on our game. It’s going to be a good battle — Friday, Saturday — but we’re looking forward to it,” he added.

The Israels-Brady Risk-Myles Hilman line combined for 10 points on the weekend. “Me and Brady have played together for a long time, so I kind of understand where he wants to be, and where he usually is on the ice. And I think he kind of thinks the same with me. And then adding Myles for the past few games has been awesome,” Israels said.

Israels was once told he wouldn’t play beyond high school. “It definitely motivated me for sure. You always like to look back and kind of hit them with, ‘Well, you were wrong.’ It’s cliche to say the journey is the best part. But the best memories have been in spots where I didn’t think I was going to end up,” Israels said. “It’s funny how hockey works. Sometimes it just happens. But as you continue to work and just get better, good things can come your way. But I wouldn’t change it for the world.”

Coach Gabinet said the Israels/Risk/Hilman line was “a big part of why we were able to get two big wins this past weekend.”

“Israels and Risk have played together in the past, and adding Myles to that line just brings a little bit of youth and some forechecking ability. There is some speed, some strength. They’re playing well together, which is great to see,” he added.

He said the Mavs would be ready for the upcoming series versus the RedHawks. “We’re going to make sure we’re finding ways to get better this week and keep growing, and be ready to go this weekend.”

“It’s just important to stay with a laser focus on trying to improve and trying to get better, and preparing for the weekend.”

With six NCHC conference points on the line, both teams know how important the series will be. Omaha is currently tied with Denver for fourth place in the NCHC. Miami is ninth place in the conference.

“Every game is a playoff game for us,” said Miami coach Anthony Noreen at his team’s weekly press conference.

“If there’s any game that we’ve had a really bad taste in our mouth about — that we’ve played this entire year — it’s that Saturday night game in Omaha,” Noreen said.

RedHawks are one of the most penalized teams in the nation (taking an average of 5 penalties a game). Omaha has had difficulty capitalizing on the power play this season, converting on just 10 of 73 opportunities (.137).

Series Preview: Omaha vs. Colorado College, Jan. 10-11, 2025

Omaha Hockey (8-10-0, 4-4-0 in conference) will face No. 13/14 Colorado College (10-7-1, 4-3-1 in conference) in the first NCHC conference series of the second half of the 2024-25 hockey season after finishing as runners-up in the 2025 Coachella Valley Cactus Cup last weekend in Palm Desert, California.

The Tigers started out the season hot, but have lost five of their last six games. They were swept by Augustana last weekend in Colorado Springs. (Omaha was also swept by Augustana earlier this season.)

Colorado College has a “scoring by committee” offense this season. Eleven Tigers have at least seven points this season. The team’s leading scorer is graduate transfer defenseman Ty Gallagher with 13 points (4 goals, 9 assists). The Tigers roster features nine players who are NHL draft picks.

Omaha’s leading scorer is graduate forward Sam Stange. Stange has 8 goals and 5 assists on the season. Fellow Wisconsin native Zach Urdahl has 7 goals and 3 assists, while junior forward Cam Mitchell is third on the team in points with 5 goals and 3 assists. (All five of Mitchell’s goals were scored in the last 8 games, including last Friday’s game-winning goal in overtime against Holy Cross.)

Mitchell was the featured player at the weekly press conference on Jan. 8. He appeared in 13 games for the Mavericks during the 2023-24 season, recording just a single assist. “The coaching staff and I had a long chat of just finding my game and finding that identity piece of my game,” Mitchell said.

Omaha has a 30-15-7 advantage in the series against the Tigers. The Mavs are 16-5-5 versus Colorado College in Omaha.

The teams played two series during the season last year. This is the only scheduled matchup for the two teams this season.

During the regular season series at Baxter Arena last year, Omaha won the first game 3-0 and tied the Tigers 1-1 in the series finale.

The Mavericks went on the road to Colorado Springs for the first round of the NCHC playoffs, coming back to win a best-of-3 series to advance to the team’s first-ever Frozen Faceoff appearance at the XCel Energy Center in St. Paul.

A close contest wouldn’t be much of a surprise... 12 of Colorado College’s games this season have been decided by one goal or less.

“We know we’ll get a good team coming here this weekend,” Coach Gabinet said at this week’s press conference.

Special teams will likely be a factor: The Tigers are 10th in the nation on the penalty kill (87.9%). Opponents are 2-for-22 on the power play in the last seven games versus the Tigers.

The Mavericks’ power play has been anemic as of late. The team went 0-for-9 on the power play during the Cactus Cup and allowed 3 power play goals.

Gabinet said the coaches continue to tweak the power play. “Coach Dave Noel-Bernier kind of revamped things a little bit even more this week. When it’s struggling like that, it’s good to look at it and make changes and keep trying new things and new combinations of personnel to try to get a jump start.”

Mitchell said the Cactus Cup experience was good for the team. “We always talk about good teams always finding a way to win. You know, hard games and close games. We found a way down the stretch to get it done. So that was a big momentum thing for us as a group for the rest of the year and for that weekend.”

He said the series should be exciting. “We’re building up a pretty good rivalry with them. Every time we play them, they’re usually pretty close and hard games.”

“We got the right guys, and we got the right game plan as well,” Mitchell said. “I think as long as we execute our game plan, and we want it more than we should, we’ll be able to get the job done.”

Fun Fact: Colorado College head coach Kris Mayotte was an assistant coach at Providence College when the Friars beat the Omaha Hockey team 4-1 in the Frozen Four semifinals in 2015.
