Series Preview: Omaha vs. Miami, Nov. 22-23, 2024

The Omaha Maverick Hockey team is back in action at Baxter Arena after earning its first conference points of the season last weekend after splitting a series with Arizona State. The Mavericks (3-7-0, 1-3-0) will take on the Miami RedHawks (3-9-2, 0-4-0) on Nov. 22-23. The teams are 27-29-7 all-time.

The Mavericks beat the RedHawks 2-1 in their last matchup, March 2, 2024 in Oxford, Ohio, sweeping the weekend series. Omaha has won the last six contests versus Miami. Miami comes into Baxter Arena having lost its last six games and is seeking its first NCHC conference points in the 2024-25 campaign.

UNO Coach Mike Gabinet said Miami plays “quick and fast,” adding, “Just watching video on them, they got a really good top line that’s put up a lot of points.” He expects the RedHawks to be “relentless all over the ice.”

Omaha is eighth in points in the NCHC, just ahead of Miami in ninth place.

Gabinet praised graduate forward Sam Stange, who transferred in this season from Wisconsin. Stange recorded a goal in each game last weekend against Arizona State and is third on the team in overall points (4 goals, 1 assist).

“I think he’s been great. We recruited him as a young man, and unfortunately didn’t get him,” Gabinet said. “He can skate. He’s big, he’s super coachable. I think he’s only going to continue to get better and better.”

Gabinet also praised Stange’s consistency. “I think if you look at the first half (of the season) and you talk about who’s been good and pretty consistent, he’s probably one of the first guys we think about from an individual performance standpoint.”

“He’s going to just keep getting better and keep growing,” Gabinet added.

Stange’s fellow Wisconsin transfer Zach Urdahl leads the team in points with 5 goals and 2 assists, but was out of the lineup for the Saturday night game against the Sun Devils. He’s one of a number of Mavericks who have been bitten by the injury bug.

Coach Gabinet didn’t provide a full injury update, but noted Urdahl, Garrett Pinoniemi, and Myles Hilman were out of the lineup on Saturday.

Fifth year forward Brock Bremer was injured in the Friday night game at ASU but did play Saturday.

Freshman Liam Watkins made his Maverick debut on Saturday night after nursing an injury sustained in July.

“In a perfect world, (Watkins would) probably still be a couple weeks out from playing (until) we can get him up and running — just with the number of practices under his belt and a chance to get (his) conditioning back,” Gabinet noted. “I thought he did a really good job. He’s a big kid that’s really smart. (He) was a top line center in the USHL last season, so he’s got a lot of really good experience.”

Stange said that injuries have opened opportunities for other players. “You never want to see the injuries that we’ve had this early in the year. But it’s also an opportunity for young guys — guys who haven’t played as much — to step into an important spot already.”

He also said the team continues to make progress. “The last few weeks have been really good. I think we’ve been playing some decent hockey — lots of close games. We’re working on pulling out more of them.”

“We know (Miami is) going to be a hungry team, just like we are right now,” Stange said. “Anybody in this conference is going to be a real test. So we’re focused on continuing a little bit of momentum that we got and being ready for them.”

“We want to play well in front of our home fans, so that’s definitely on our minds, and we’re looking forward to it,” he added.

Tickets for the Saturday night game are sold out. If any additional reserved inventory is available (tickets turned back by Miami), it will be released Friday at 3 p.m. Once that inventory is gone, standing room only tickets will be available for purchase on Saturday starting at 4 p.m.

UNO Blue Line Club’s “Dinner With The Mavs”: Fellowship and Fun With Our Favorite Team

Fans had an opportunity to dine with the University of Nebraska at Omaha Maverick Hockey team on Nov. 29 at Anthony’s Steakhouse.

The evening event — dubbed “Dinner With The Mavs” — was reminiscent of Blue Line Club luncheons of yore.

Terry Leahy served as emcee for the event. Leahy provides color commentary on UNO Hockey radio broadcasts, has an encyclopedic knowledge of local hockey history, and is a good friend.

UNO Hockey Blue Line Club President Roger Humphries also addressed the attendees. Humphries is a passionate fan who is involved in civic organizations throughout the Omaha area. He serves on Bridget’s marketing/membership committee and on the Omaha Press Club Board of Directors.

Coach Mike Gabinet traveled around the dining hall and greeted fans as they settled in at their tables. He thanked participants for coming out the the event.

One of the things I think is crucial for the health of a collegiate athletic program is for the fan base to feel invested in the team.

All too often, the “fan experience” in major athletics is relegated to what happens in the arena of competition — the experience doesn’t typically extend beyond the games.

The “Dinner WIth The Mavs” gave fans an opportunity to dine with the team (a player or two sat at each table). We felt fortunate to have senior goaltender Alex Blankenburg at our table, and enjoyed visiting with him during the event.

My apologies for this blurry selfie I tried to take in the dim light of Anthony's:

The buffet-style dinner is the first of two the BLC will hold this season. The next event will be on Thursday, Feb. 28.

There was a 50/50 raffle at the door, and fans were able to bid on silent auction items, which included this autographed helmet:

I know the UNO Blue Line Club has been attempting to do an “in-season” dinner event like this for a few years now. The nice thing about an evening event (as opposed to a luncheon) is that it gives busy professionals a chance to attend.

With work, meetings, and family commitments, we haven't been able to attend the luncheons in recent years, so an evening format worked out well.

Bridget and I had a nice time. I hope that the UNO Blue Line Club (and the UNO Hockey program) continues to do events such as this — giving fans a chance to learn more about the program and commune with the team.

It makes a difference knowing the young men you are cheering for on a perennial basis.

Saturday Night, Support Toys For Tots in Sheila's Honor

The annual Sheila Leahy Toys for Tots drive will take place this Saturday, Nov. 19 during the home hockey series versus Minnesota Duluth. The Blue Line Club and the U.S. Marines will join forces to make Christmas special for area boys and girls.

"This is the 20th season of UNO Hockey, and our fans have helped out with donated unwrapped toys and dollars every year," says Rich Buckingham of the UNO Blue Line Club.

The annual Toys for Tots collection has occurred before a Maverick hockey game every year since 1997. In 2015, the collection was named for Sheila Leahy, the late wife of Maverick Hockey broadcaster Terry Leahy. Sheila died in May 2015. She had been the driving force behind the annual toy-and-cash collection since its inception.

Please bring your new, unwrapped toys -- and/or open your wallet and give a cash donation -- to help support the U.S. Marines' collection to benefit Omaha-area families. Collection points will be found at all three Baxter Arena entrances.

When UNO Started the Stampede...and Bridget Staffed the Civic With Volunteers

By Jon Brooks

On May 11, 2000, the UNO and the UNO Hockey Blue Line Club announced they were going to hold an early season hockey tournament called the Maverick Stampede.

The tournament offered an opportunity to start off the hockey season in style, and featured a mix of foes from around college hockey.

The UNO Hockey Blue Line Club entered into a contractual agreement with the university to co-sponsor the event with the opportunity to "earn" money for the BLC. In order to increase revenue potential, the typical "paid" game staff (ticket takers, ushers, door monitors) were replaced for the weekend with volunteers.

Bridget and I served on the Stampede committee (which featured a variety of potential organizers and sponsors for the event). What started out as a group of roughly 30 people soon dwindled into a core group of about 10 people.

Bridget was charged with finding 50 volunteers to handle those positions during each of the four Stampede games that weekend.

That was not an easy task, and it was especially hard given the fact that a number of volunteers were paying season ticket holders who would have preferred to watch the games from the comfort of their blue plastic seat.

Finding people willing to do just that was a difficult job in itself for Bridget Weide, who coordinated the UNO Hockey Blue Line Club's effort to round up volunteers who will serve as ushers, ticket-takers and in various other support roles at the auditorium Friday and Saturday nights.

"These are people," Weide said, "who are kindly and generously donating their time." -- Omaha World-Herald, Oct. 9, 2000.

Not only did her efforts help save the program money both nights, it was an opportunity for us to lend a helping hand during the games.

The following Spring, Bridget was named "Blue Line Club Volunteer of the Year" at the program's annual postseason awards banquet.

They only staffed the Stampede with volunteers during the first two seasons.

Today, the Maverick Stampede seems like a distant memory (the 2011-12 season was the last time the event was held).

I enjoyed having the event in the lineup. It served as a great opportunity to see programs we don't normally get to watch in Omaha.

One aspect of UNO's tenure in the CCHA that made the Stampede possible was that Alaska-Fairbanks was their travel partner, and playing two games in Alaska each season allowed the program to play an additional pair of games each season (beyond the NCAA limit).

Perhaps now that UNO is moving into their own arena there will be an opportunity in the future to bring the Stampede back...in some way, shape, or form...

P.S. -- The 2000 Stampede is where the team unveiled their "uber-cool" silver third jersey.
