Mavs on the Move 2025-26 | Portal Moves, Pro Signings, Incoming Recruits



It’s that time of year … moving season!

With “preseason” upon us (“There is no offseason, only preseason,”) we’ll be tracking Mavericks leaving for the pro ranks, players going into the portal, and incoming Mavericks from the transfer portal. I’ll do a separate blog post for commits, since we don’t always know which season they’re coming in.

So here is your “Mavs on the Move” player watch...

Incoming Recruits (commits expected to join the Mavericks for 2026-27):
Forward Gavin Hodnett of the Edmonton Oil Kings announced his commitment to Omaha on Instagram on Monday, April 20. Read about him here:

Incoming Mavericks (from the transfer portal):

Sophomore defenseman Jayden Jubenvill is transferring from North Dakota to Omaha. He appeared in 15 games for the Fighting Hawks and had 2 assists on the season. He’s a native of Gilbert Plains, MB (Canada). 

Maverick fans will remember Jubenvill’s name … he scored the game-winning goal with just over 90 seconds left when North Dakota swept the Mavericks in the NCHC Quarterfinals at Baxter Arena in March 2025, sending the Fighting Hawks to the final Frozen Faceoff in St. Paul.


The transfer portal opened on April 13, 2026 and closes April 28, 2026. Graduating students may be eligible to enter the portal outside these dates, as are players whose head coach leaves their program.

Mavericks in the transfer portal (outgoing Mavs):

Freshman forward Jérémy Loranger is in the transfer portal. This one caught us by surprise. The co-MavPuck Player of the Year played in 28 games (7-12—19) and had four power play goals (second among all Mavericks). A Columbus Blue Jackets draft pick, he missed a number of games in November with a lower-body injury, but picked up his production on his return. Loranger has committed to the University of Connecticut. (updated 4/20/26)

Sophomore forward Chase LaPinta is in the portal. LaPinta saw limited action for the Mavericks this past season, recording one assist in three games played. (LaPinta is transferring to Lindenwood, according to College Hockey Transfers.)

Mavs on the Move 2023-24 | Portal Moves, Pro Signings, Incoming Recruits


With the season ending, it’s time for the “Mavs on the Move” player watch...


Incoming Mavericks (from the transfer portal):

  • Brady Risk, transfer from Alaska. He was the team’s leading scorer with 13 goals and 20 assists. He was also an alternate captain for the Nanooks last year.
  • Harrison Israels, transfer from Alaska. He was captain of the 23-24 Nanooks and led the team in goals last season (with 20). 
  • Sam Stange, transfer from Wisconsin. He played four years for Wisconsin, but saw limited playing time during the 2023-24 season. He has 13 goals and 16 assists over his college career.
  • Garrett Pinoniemi (PIN-uh-KNEE-me), transfer from Minnesota. A sophomore during the 2023-24 season, he appeared in 35 games, finishing the season with one goal and two assists.
  • Dylan Gratton, transfer from Penn State. A sophomore defenseman during the 2023-24 season, he appeared in 36 games for the Nittany Lions, and had 3 goals and 10 assists. 
  • Aiden Gallacher, transfer from Northern Michigan. Gallacher was captain for the Wildcats his senior season (2023-24), a career best year for him with 3 goals and 5 assists. He previously played two seasons with Michigan State.

  • Junior forward Ty Mueller signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Vancouver Canucks (NHL). 

  • Fifth year forward  Jack Randl signed with the Bridgeport Islanders (AHL).
  • Senior forward Matt Miller signed with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms (AHL). 
  • Fifth year forward Nolan Sullivan signed with the Kansas City Mavericks (ECHL). 
  • Fifth year goaltender Seth Eisele signed with the Calgary Wranglers (AHL). 
  • Fifth year forward Jesse Lansdell signed with the Florida Everglades (ECHL). 

  • Junior defenseman Victor Mancini signed a two-year, entry-level contract with the New York Rangers (NHL).

Series Preview: Desert Hockey Classic Tournament, Jan. 5-6, 2024


After a long break, Omaha returns to action on Friday, Jan. 5 facing UMass Lowell in the Desert Hockey Classic tournament, hosted by Arizona State University. The Mavs and the River Hawks will face off at 4:30 p.m. Central at Mullett Arena in Tempe. Omaha’s opponent for Saturday’s game will either be ASU or Harvard, depending on the outcome of Friday’s matchups.

Omaha and UMass Lowell last faced off in 2017, splitting the series in Massachusetts, with Omaha winning Friday and the River Hawks getting the win on Saturday.

The River Hawks are 6-10-2 overall, and 3-6-1 in Hockey East. The Mavericks are 9-5-2 overall, and 3-4-1 in the NCHC. Omaha last played on Dec. 8-9 at Baxter Arena, splitting a series with St. Cloud State University (losing 4-1 Friday and tying 2-2 Saturday, winning a shootout to get the extra conference point).

 

Coach Mike Gabinet said the team is “anxious to get back” to playing hockey, adding “Any time you’re in a tournament setting is exciting. The guys are looking forward to it.”

 

He said it’s a little tougher for players to come back to a road game versus being home at Baxter Arena, but added that the team is looking forward to spending time together. The team is looking forward to seeing ASU, a program that will be “a big part of the (NCHC) conference” in the future. He noted there will be “lots of alumni there and lots of fans there. It will be really exciting and should be a great weekend.”

 

Scouting the River Hawks, Coach Gabinet said they are a “good team with good structure. They will be tough, but we’re ready to face them.” 

 

The Mavericks are expected to get forwards Zach Urdahl and Jimmy Glynn back from injuries suffered before the holidays. The status of forward Matt Miller was less certain.

 

Graduate forward Jack Randl also said the team was also looking forward to playing in a new arena. The tournament focus makes preparation for the weekend a little more difficult, but he said the team will “go out and play and focus on us and what we do. We want to focus on us and have a good mindset going into the game, no matter who we are playing.”

 

Looking at UMass Lowell, Randl said the River Hawks “Play hard, an honest game. They get in on the forecheck and are good defensively.” 

 

Randl said the team is looking forward to the warm weather of Arizona. “Hopefully we’ll get down and get some sun.”

 

Looking ahead to the second half of the season, Randl said the team will “continue to get better every game and every practice. We want to continue to grow so when March comes we’re hitting our stride and everything we worked toward is coming together. We want to get better every day and every week, and we want to keep building off it.”

For Fans Attending the Games in Person in Tempe:

You’re invited to meet up at 1 p.m. at the Hyatt Place hotel, 601 E. 6th Street, for a team send-off. Stick around afterwards for an Omaha Athletics fan social (cash bar).


The Omaha vs. UMass-Lowell starts at 3:30 p.m. local time at Mullett Arena, 411 S. Packard Drive in Tempe. Mullett Arena has a clear bag policy and is cashless for concession purchases. (Full policies)


The “Mavs on the Move” event, sponsored by the UNO Alumni Association, will begin at 5 p.m. at Society, 920 E. University Drive, Suite 204. (One half-mile from the arena.) Pre-registrations are required.
