NCHC Media Days 2026 Insights (Day 1)

St. Thomas head coach Rico Blasi and sophomore forward Lucas Van Vliet

By Bridget (Weide) Brooks

The National Collegiate Hockey Conference hosted its annual Media Day this week (Sept. 22-23), bringing together coaches and players representing every team from across the conference. Over two days on Zoom, programs reflected on the past season and looked ahead to a newly expanded conference with the addition of St. Thomas.

Day 1 featured Minnesota Duluth, St. Thomas, St. Cloud State, and Omaha, along with NCHC Commissioner Heather Weems’ state of the conference address and media availability. Our recap of Weems’ address is here:
NCHC Commissioner Heather Weems Looks Ahead to the 2026-27 Season

UMD Banks on Continuity
Minnesota Duluth returns 19 players from last year's 24-win NCAA Tournament team, including Hobey Baker winner Max Plante and a veteran leadership group, giving the Bulldogs plenty of continuity heading into the season.

“They’re very motivated to maybe go a step further or more this year,” head coach Scott Sandelin said.

Sandelin said the Bulldogs may have more flexibility and depth up front this season, with newcomers including Victor Plante and St. Cloud State transfer Barrett Hall. Sandelin said Max, Zam, and Victor Plante will likely start the season on a line together.

UMD will have a new look in goal following Adam Gajan's departure. Sandelin said Ethan Dahlmeir, who went 5-1-1 when given an opportunity last season, freshman Karl Axelsson, and sophomore Cole Sheffield are all competing for playing time. He called it “a really healthy situation,” with the opening-weekend assignments still to be determined. In front of them, UMD returns five experienced defensemen, a group Sandelin expects to “carry us.”

Plante, meanwhile, said winning the Hobey Baker hasn't changed what he wants to accomplish at UMD.

“I’m still only a 20-year-old kid,” he said. “Still haven’t won either a conference championship or a national championship, which is really the goal of playing hockey.”

Despite UMD entering the year fifth nationally and third in the NCHC preseason poll, Plante said the Bulldogs are trying to tune out those expectations.

“The outside noise, hopefully, doesn’t play any factors into what we know we have in the room,” he said, adding, “Fifth is pretty high and third in the conference is pretty high without really winning anything last year.”

St. Thomas: Five Years of Change — and a Big Step
St. Thomas enters its first season in the NCHC after the most successful year of its brief Division I history. The Tommies finished 21-12-5 last season, placed second in the CCHA, and advanced to the Mason Cup championship game for the second straight year.

It’s the latest step in a remarkable five-year stretch for a program that made the jump directly from Division III to Division I in 2021.

When Rico Blasi took the job, he knew he would be overseeing that transition. What he didn’t know was everything else that would follow.

“We didn't have a building in place yet. So that came along the third year,” Blasi said. “Oh, and by the way, we're going to join the NCHC. How about that?”

Blasi said joining the NCHC wasn’t part of the original plan, but the conference fits St. Thomas’ geographic footprint. After years of adding scholarships, opening Lee & Penny Anderson Arena, reaching two conference championship games, and navigating changes throughout college hockey, Blasi joked that he’s ready for a little less change.

“Hopefully, we can settle down a little bit now and just play games and continue to develop these guys to play at the next level.”

Sophomore forward Lucas Van Vliet is coming off a strong freshman season. The Vegas Golden Knights draft pick was named CCHA Rookie of the Year after recording 14 goals and 21 assists for 35 points in 37 games as a freshman.

Van Vliet said his focus this offseason wasn’t on adding more offense. It was becoming more physical.

“I want to be a little bit more physical and show these teams that I'm not just all about getting points,” Van Vliet said. “I want to be able to get in their head with physicality and forechecking and backchecking.”

Van Vliet also acknowledged that the Tommies will face a different challenge in their new conference, calling the NCHC a top conference in college hockey and pointing specifically to the increased skill level they expect to see.

Blasi, meanwhile, said the conference change won’t alter St. Thomas’ approach. Every member of the Tommies’ coaching staff has either played or coached in the NCHC, giving the program familiarity with its new opponents even if many of the players will be seeing them for the first time.

“We prepare like we're focused on winning championships,” Blasi said. “And so for us, from what we do, it really doesn't change.”

St. Cloud State: 17 New Players, But Plenty of Familiar Faces
St. Cloud State enters the 2026-27 season with a new head coach, 17 new players, and a newly renovated Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.

Head coach Nick Oliver, however, has plenty of history with the Huskies.

Oliver played at St. Cloud State from 2011-15, serving as captain his senior season, and was an assistant coach with the Huskies from 2018-22. He returned to St. Cloud State in April after three seasons as an assistant coach at Wisconsin.

He also brought back several former Huskies to join him on the coaching staff. Four of the five members of the staff are St. Cloud State alumni.

“If our experience wasn't as good as it was when we played here, none of us would be back,” Oliver said. “And I think it shows, hopefully, our players and represents our program in the sense that this place matters to us. And that's why we're back.”

Oliver was hired the day before the transfer portal opened, leaving him very little time to rebuild the roster. Nine players returned, while 17 new players joined the program.

“We didn't have time to sit and feel sorry for ourselves in any way,” Oliver said.

Oliver said the returning players stayed because they believed in the program and wanted to continue playing with their teammates.

“It wasn't because of me, it wasn't because of who their head coach was going to be,” Oliver said. “It's because they love this program and they believe in this program and they love their teammates.”

Senior forward Jack Reimann is one of those returners. His father, Dan, played for St. Cloud State from 1992-96, and Reimann grew up watching the Huskies.

“I like to say I bleed red and black,” Reimann said. “I've always been connected, I always want to be connected, and that's partly why I'm still here.”

With so many new players, Oliver said there is plenty of competition for spots in the lineup and for different roles.

“We're going to let our players dictate what that lineup looks like,” Oliver said. “The first few weeks of practice have been very competitive, and we're going to keep letting these guys kind of sort that out for us.”

Among the newcomers Oliver mentioned were transfers William Ahlrik, Jake Southgate, Charlie Lurie, Jacob Napier, and Finn McLaughlin, along with freshmen Brock Souch, Hayden Paupanekis, and Carson Pilgrim.

St. Cloud State was picked eighth in the NCHC preseason media poll. Oliver also noted that 37 teams received votes in the first USCHO poll of the season, and the Huskies weren't one of them.

But neither Oliver nor Reimann seemed particularly concerned about where the Huskies were picked.

“We haven't even talked about it once,” Oliver said. “We haven't even brought it up.”

Reimann said the Huskies are focused on taking the season one day at a time.

“I don't think there's really anything to talk about,” Reimann said. “All you can really do is focus on today and get better today.”

Oliver did acknowledge one possible benefit of being overlooked.

“I imagine it's a nice little chip to put on these guys' shoulder for sure.”

And Then There’s Omaha
Omaha Hockey closed out Day 1 of NCHC Media Day. We have a separate recap of the Maverick’s session with head coach Mike Gabinet and junior defenseman Marc Lajoie here:

Day 2 of NCHC Media Day featured Miami, Western Michigan, North Dakota, Colorado College, Arizona State, and Denver. Look for our recap of those sessions next.

MavPuck NCHC Frozen Faceoff Quarterfinal Picks

MavPuck NCHC Frozen Faceoff Quarterfinal Picks

#1 UND vs. #8 Omaha
Jason’s Pick: UND in 3
On paper, UND is a better team in all regards. Omaha has had success in Grand Forks and tends to do better on the road than at home. They have been playing better of late and I think they can find a way to steal a game. But UND will not go quietly and they have the fire power to overwhelm the Mavericks.

Jon’s Pick: UND in 2
North Dakota has outscored their opponents in NCHC play 96-58 this season. By the same token, Omaha has been outscored by NCHC opponents 86-57. If these numbers hold, and UND freshmen goalie Jan Špunar continues his sub-2.0 GAA average, it will be a tough weekend for the Mavericks.

#2 Denver vs. Miami
Jason’s Pick: DU in 2
Denver wants a #1 seed and will need a strong showing against the RedHawks to begin a climb in the national rankings. Even then it may not be enough. DU is a fast team with a lot of skill. If they get solid goaltending they are a team to fear.

Jon’s Pick: DU in 2
Miami has only won 2 out of their last 8 games. The month of February has not been kind to the RedHawks. The RedHawks have had a good run this season, going 18-14-2 overall and winning 9 games in NCHC play after having not tallied a single win in conference play in the 2024-25 campaign. But Denver has one of the top D-corps in the NCHC. DU goaltender Johnny Hicks has a 1.14 goals against average and .958 save percentage.

#3 Western Michigan vs. Colorado College
Jason’s Pick: Western in 2
Western Michigan is ready to defend their title. But they are likely to be placed in a tough bracket. Winning the NCHC might be their only ticket to a good draw. But CC has a goaltender who is known for stealing games and is playing his final collegiate hockey games. This is certainly an upset watch.

Jon’s Pick: Western in 2
Western Michigan has too much firepower on the roster. They have multiple lines that will come at you in waves. Breakout performer William Whitelaw could have a big weekend against the Tigers. I don't think Kaidan Mbereko will be enough in net for CC to stop the onslaught at Lawson.

#4 Minnesota Duluth vs. St Cloud State
Jason’s Pick: SCSU in 3
Duluth is trending down the second half of the season. They go the way the Plante family goes. If they catch fire it could be a bloodbath for Duluth. SCSU has surprised many and look to keep the run going. Expect a defensive battle, could be three 2-1 games.

Jon’s Pick: UMD in 2
Observers typically look at the 4-5 matchup as the “upset special” in the NCHC playoffs. And while that is a possibility between these in-state rivals, I think the effectiveness of UMD's top line featuring Hobey Baker nominees (and brothers) Zam Plante and Max Plante will likely decide this series. If the games are tight, sophomore Slovakian goaltender Adam Gajan (2.27 GAA, .905 SV%) could prove to be the difference for UMD in net.

Omaha vs SCSU Weekend Recap (Jan. 9-10, 2026)

By Bridget (Weide) Brooks

Omaha Hockey was a tale of two teams over the weekend, rolling to a convincing comeback win Friday before dropping a tightly contested game on Saturday as the Mavericks and St. Cloud State split their NCHC series at Baxter Arena.

Friday: Omaha 6, St. Cloud State 2

After falling behind early, Omaha flipped the script on Friday night, scoring six unanswered goals to erase a two-goal deficit and cruise past St. Cloud State, 6-2.

The Huskies struck twice in the opening 11 minutes, capitalizing on an Omaha interference penalty before adding an even-strength goal less than four minutes later to take a 2-0 lead. From there, however, the night belonged to the Mavericks — and to Dawson Cowan.

Cowan slammed the door for the final 49 minutes, finishing with 28 saves and making several key stops as Omaha steadily took control of the game.

The comeback began late in the first period when Maxime Pellerin pounced on a loose puck following a failed clearing attempt and buried his team-leading seventh goal to pull Omaha within one. Just over two minutes later, freshman defenseman Spencer Sova wired a shot from the blue line to tie the game 2-2 heading into the intermission.

Omaha grabbed its first lead midway through the second period after crisp puck movement off a faceoff saw Samuel Huo find Jeremy Loranger, who fed Trevor Wong racing to the net for a one-timer and a 3-2 advantage. The Mavericks weren’t done.

Marcus Nguyen made it four straight goals with a rebound finish later in the period, and Omaha continued to apply pressure in the third. A power-play goal from Huo extended the lead, and Sean Tschigerl sealed the win with an empty-netter as the Mavericks matched their season high with six goals.

Six different players found the back of the net, marking the fifth time in six games (including the exhibition game) that Omaha scored at least four goals.

Saturday: St. Cloud State 2, Omaha 1

Saturday night told a very different story.

With both teams tightening defensively, chances were harder to come by as Omaha and St. Cloud State traded momentum in a low-scoring battle that ultimately swung on special teams.

Omaha opened the scoring early in the second period when Brett Hyland slipped a pass to Samuel Huo in front during a power play, and Huo finished for his second goal of the weekend. It marked Omaha’s seventh shot on goal of the night after a quiet first period that saw the Mavericks generate limited offense despite multiple power-play opportunities.

St. Cloud answered less than three minutes later, converting to tie the game 1-1 before the second intermission.

Cowan continued his strong weekend, making several key saves early in the third period to keep the game deadlocked. But the Huskies broke through on a power play midway through the final frame, scoring the eventual game-winner in transition.

Omaha thought it had equalized late when Cam Mitchell fired a shot that appeared to sneak across the goal line, but video review ruled the puck did not fully cross the line.

Despite a late power play and sustained pressure, Omaha managed just one shot on goal over the final five minutes as St. Cloud held on for the 2-1 win.

Series Notes

  • Omaha outscored St. Cloud State 7-4 over the weekend.

  • Samuel Huo led Omaha with power play goals in both games, scoring twice across the series.

  • Dawson Cowan stopped 48 of 52 shots on the weekend and did not allow a goal over the final 49 minutes of Friday’s win.

  • Friday marked the fifth time in six games Omaha scored four or more goals.

Series Preview: Omaha vs. St. Cloud State University, Jan. 24-25, 2025

Omaha Hockey (12-10-0, 8-4-0 in the NCHC) will face No. 17 St. Cloud State University (11-11-0, 4-8-0 in conference) on Jan. 24-25 at Baxter Arena in their second matchup of the 2024-25 season.

The last time the two teams met was in St. Cloud, Minn., with the Mavericks winning 4-3 in overtime on Friday, and the Huskies taking the 5-2 victory on Saturday night to split the series.

St. Cloud is on a four-game losing streak, having been swept by Minnesota-Duluth in Duluth 2-0 and 5-2, and being swept by Arizona State in St. Cloud 6-3 and 5-3 last weekend.

Omaha is on a four-game winning streak, sweeping Colorado College at Baxter Arena before sweeping Miami in Oxford, Ohio last weekend. Omaha had six different goal-scorers last weekend, and nine players with assists. The Mavericks are currently third in the NCHC with 23 points.

SCSU leads the all-time series with Omaha 30-18-4. Omaha is 5-4-1 in the last 10 matchups.

Junior defenseman Jacob Guevin and Omaha Hockey head coach Mike Gabinet met with the media to preview the series.

SCSU is outscoring its opponents in the first two periods. “That’s really important to start on time and making sure you’re prepared appropriately to make sure that you’re doing the things right off the bat and not taking time to get into the game,” Gabinet said.

He said Omaha and SCSU are similar. “We’re a little bit similar in how we play the game and our structure,” Gabinet said. “We always know [it’s] going to be a hard-fought battle against them. They compete hard, they’re disciplined. We’re prepared for them. And it should be a good series.”

Gabinet praised several defensive players, including junior transfer Dylan Gratton, named KJ Branding NCHC Player of the Week. “Nice to see him step up and have a really big impact on both games.”

On Isaiah Norlin: “He’s a guy that can really make things happen offensively. He’s a dangerous player with [the] puck, in a positive way. I think he’s got a chance to be a really, really good player — and he’s working towards that now — and it’s been fun to watch him develop and continue to grow.”

On Jacob Guevin: “He’s a big-time worker. He really competes hard in practice every day, and he puts the work in necessary to be good come the weekend time. From day one, he’s been not only doing well offensively, but defending hard, being very competitive out there, eating some big minutes for us, and just [continuing] to develop.”

Guevin attributed his success this season to “growing and opportunities.”

“Coming in as a freshman, I had some stuff to learn, and I got to get better, get stronger, so I think I did my part, and then opportunities also came along the way,” Guevin said. “So I think this year I’m playing a little bigger role. And yeah, it’s been nice to see some results along the way for sure.”

Looking ahead to this weekend, Guevin said “I think it’s fun to play St. Cloud. They have a good team this year, for sure. They’re in a tough stretch right now, but they’re going to come out hard.”

“We have plenty of confidence right now, and we’re just gonna try to keep winning some hockey games,” he added.
