Mavs on the Move 2025-26 | Portal Moves, Pro Signings, Incoming Recruits



It’s that time of year … moving season!

With “preseason” upon us (“There is no offseason, only preseason,”) we’ll be tracking Mavericks leaving for the pro ranks, players going into the portal, and incoming Mavericks from the transfer portal. I’ll do a separate blog post for commits, since we don’t always know which season they’re coming in.

So here is your “Mavs on the Move” player watch...

Incoming Recruits (commits expected to join the Mavericks for 2026-27):

Incoming Mavericks (from the transfer portal):

Sophomore defenseman Jayden Jubenvill is transferring from North Dakota to Omaha. He appeared in 15 games for the Fighting Hawks and had 2 assists on the season. He’s a native of Gilbert Plains, MB (Canada). 

Maverick fans will remember Jubenvill’s name … he scored the game-winning goal with just over 90 seconds left when North Dakota swept the Mavericks in the NCHC Quarterfinals at Baxter Arena in March 2025, sending the Fighting Hawks to the final Frozen Faceoff in St. Paul.


The transfer portal opened on April 13, 2026 and closes April 28, 2026. Graduating students may be eligible to enter the portal outside these dates, as are players whose head coach leaves their program.

Mavericks in the transfer portal (outgoing Mavs):

Freshman forward Jérémy Loranger is in the transfer portal. This one caught us by surprise. The co-MavPuck Player of the Year played in 28 games (7-12—19) and had four power play goals (second among all Mavericks). A Columbus Blue Jackets draft pick, he missed a number of games in November with a lower-body injury, but picked up his production on his return. Loranger has committed to the University of Connecticut. (updated 4/20/26)

Sophomore forward Chase LaPinta is in the portal. LaPinta saw limited action for the Mavericks this past season, recording one assist in three games played. (LaPinta is transferring to Lindenwood, according to College Hockey Transfers.)

#Oldbull Cam Mitchell Signs Pro Contract with Wichita Thunder

A Maverick is heading to the professional ranks.

Former Omaha forward Cameron Mitchell has signed with the Wichita Thunder of the ECHL, the team announced Thursday, beginning the next chapter of his hockey career following four seasons with the Mavericks.

Mitchell appeared in 93 career games at Omaha, recording 10 goals and 18 assists for 28 points during his time with the program. Known for his work ethic and steady presence in the lineup, the Stony Plain, Alberta native earned the respect of teammates and coaches alike while serving as an alternate captain during the 2025-26 season.

Head coach Mike Gabinet praised Mitchell’s approach to the game as he makes the jump to the professional level.

“So happy to see Cam move onto the pro level. He is a player that does the right things day in and day out,” Gabinet said. “He has a bright future and I am excited to watch him play.”

Mitchell’s most productive collegiate season came in 2024-25, when he posted eight goals and 12 assists for 20 points in 32 games. He also scored a pair of shorthanded goals that season and added a game-winning goal.

During his senior campaign in 2025-26, Mitchell recorded two goals and four assists for six points in 34 games while continuing to play an important role in Omaha’s forward group.

Now he begins his professional career with the Wichita Thunder, an ECHL club affiliated with the NHL’s San Jose Sharks and the AHL’s San Jose Barracuda.

The signing also reunites Mitchell with a familiar face from Omaha. Former Maverick defenseman Kirby Proctor, who played for the Mavericks from 2019-24, is currently on Wichita’s roster — giving the Thunder a pair of players with recent ties to the program.

Wichita announced Mitchell’s signing alongside forward Gavin Best as the team continues a lengthy road trip before returning home to INTRUST Bank Arena later this season.

For Mitchell, the move marks the next step after four years of development in the NCHC — and another Maverick alumnus continuing the program’s pipeline to professional hockey.

Omaha vs. Miami (OH) Weekend Recap (Feb. 27-28, 2026)

Mavericks Split with Miami, Clinch NCHC Playoff Berth

The final weekend of the regular season delivered exactly what the Mavericks needed.

Omaha split its two-game series with Miami (Ohio) at Baxter Arena, winning Friday night 5-3 before falling 4-2 on Saturday. Combined with Arizona State’s loss to Denver, the Mavericks secured the final NCHC playoff spot and finished the regular season eighth in the conference standings.

Omaha now turns its attention to the NCHC quarterfinals, where the Mavericks will travel to face regular-season champion North Dakota in a best-of-three series.

Friday: Mavericks Surge in Third Period to Stay Alive
Facing a must-win situation, Omaha delivered one of its most complete efforts of the season Friday night.

The Mavericks controlled much of the play and outshot Miami 38-24, including a dominant 17-4 advantage in the second period. 

Omaha opened the scoring late in the first period when Jacob Slipec carried the puck through the neutral zone and found Cam Mitchell alone in front. Mitchell beat Miami goaltender Matteo Drobac with 1:44 remaining in the period for his second goal of the season.

The Mavericks extended the lead early in the second period on the power play. Jeremy Loranger fired a shot from the point that Tyler Rollwagen redirected past Drobac at 6:15, giving Omaha a 2-0 advantage.

Miami answered late in the period with a power-play goal from Matteo Giampa to cut the lead to 2-1 heading into the third.

The RedHawks tied the game just 1:43 into the third period when Giampa scored his second goal of the night.

But Omaha quickly regained control.

Less than three minutes later, Brett Hyland restored the Mavericks’ lead when he finished a play set up by Samuel Huo and Jacob Guevin. Just over three minutes after that, Guevin ripped a power-play goal from the faceoff circle to push the lead to 4-2.

Miami made things interesting late when Casper Nassen scored with 37.5 seconds remaining after the RedHawks pulled their goalie.

Any suspense ended moments later.

Slipec sealed the victory with an empty-net goal with eight seconds remaining.

Simon Latkoczy finished with 21 saves in the win.

Saturday: Game Ends in Loss, but Postseason Secured

Saturday’s regular-season finale was far more chaotic.

The teams combined for 96 penalty minutes in a chippy game that included a large scrum late in the second period. 

Miami opened the scoring six minutes into the game on a power-play goal from Shaun McEwen.

Omaha answered midway through the first period when Marcus Nguyen scored his team-leading 11th goal of the season on a play started by Samuel Huo.

The RedHawks responded just 47 seconds later, as Matteo Giampa beat Latkoczy to restore Miami’s lead.

The Mavericks pulled even again in the second period when Myles Hilman drove along the boards and slipped a shot past Drobac for his fifth goal of the season.

The game remained tied until late in the second period when Ilia Morozov scored with 1:39 remaining to give Miami a 3-2 lead.

Omaha pushed for the equalizer late in the third period and pulled Latkoczy for the extra attacker, but McEwen scored from his own end of the ice with 1:47 remaining to seal the 4-2 Miami victory.

The Big Picture: Mavericks Still Clinch Playoff Spot
Despite Saturday’s loss, Omaha still got the result it needed.

Arizona State fell to Denver later in the evening, allowing the Mavericks to hold onto eighth place in the NCHC standings with 24 points.

That result officially sent Omaha to the conference playoffs.

The Mavericks will now travel to Grand Forks for a best-of-three quarterfinal series against North Dakota as postseason play begins next weekend.

Omaha Hockey Announces 2025-26 Leadership Group




Omaha hockey head coach Mike Gabinet announced Tuesday senior goaltender Simon Latkoczy and senior defenseman Griffin Ludtke will serve as the program’s 26th and 27th Menke Family Captains in program history, respectively, alongside senior forwards Tyler Rollwagen and Cam Mitchell, who the Mavericks have named as assistant captains for the 2025-26 campaign.

This is the fifth time that the Mavericks have had co-captains in a single season, the first since 2015-16, when defenseman Brian Cooper and forward Jake Guentzel both donned a “C” on their sweater.

“We are proud to name Simon Latkoczy and Griffin Ludtke as our captains, with Tyler Rollwagen and Cam Mitchell serving as our assistant captains this season,” Gabinet said. “Simon has earned the trust of our group with his relentless dedication, discipline and preparation, lifting the standard in every environment he’s in. Griffin has a unique ability to know each player and connect with our group. He leads with a natural positivity and care for this program that sets the tone for how we want to operate every day.”

Latkoczy is coming off a 2024-25 campaign in which he cemented himself as the NCHC Goaltender of the Year, the first in Omaha history. The Trencin, Slovakia native recorded a 2.71 goals against average, a .922 save percentage and 952 saves (second-most in the NCHC).

The 5-foot-11, 177-pound netminder enters the 2025-26 season with 44 wins, the fourth-most in program history.

Ludtke enters his senior season with Omaha after playing in all 36 games and recording 13 points (2G-11A) just a season ago. Ludtke buried his second career game-winning goal on March 1, 2025, against then-No. 12 Arizona State.

During the Elko, Minn., native’s 2023-24 campaign, Ludtke finished second among all Mavericks with 27 points (4G-23A).

Both of Omaha’s incoming assistant captains are coming off career-high seasons in points.

Rollwagen tallied 15 points (3G-12A) through 36 games in 2024-25 and has skated in 107 games since his freshman season in 2022-23. The Bloomington, Minn., native netted three power play goals last season.

Mitchell enters his senior season with the Mavericks after setting career highs across the board with 33 games played, eight goals, 12 assists and 20 points. The Stony Plain, Alberta, Canada native led Omaha with two shorthanded goals and had a highlight reel game-winner on Jan. 3, 2025, when he scored in overtime against Holy Cross in the inaugural Cactus Cup in Palm Desert, Calif.

“Tyler is a highly competitive, vocal leader with a great work ethic who holds himself and others to a high standard daily,” Gabinet added. “Cam does the right things day in and day out, and his professionalism and consistency make him a steady presence and a natural leader in our locker room. We also have a locker room full of players who lead in different ways, even if they aren’t wearing a letter. These individuals could easily wear one, and that collective leadership will drive us forward this season.”

Series Preview: Omaha vs. Colorado College, Jan. 10-11, 2025


Omaha Hockey (8-10-0, 4-4-0 in conference) will face No. 13/14 Colorado College (10-7-1, 4-3-1 in conference) in the first NCHC conference series of the second half of the 2024-25 hockey season after finishing as runners-up in the 2025 Coachella Valley Cactus Cup last weekend in Palm Desert, California.

The Tigers started out the season hot, but have lost five of their last six games. They were swept by Augustana last weekend in Colorado Springs. (Omaha was also swept by Augustana earlier this season.)

Colorado College has a “scoring by committee” offense this season. Eleven Tigers have at least seven points this season. The team’s leading scorer is graduate transfer defenseman Ty Gallagher with 13 points (4 goals, 9 assists). The Tigers roster features nine players who are NHL draft picks.

Omaha’s leading scorer is graduate forward Sam Stange. Stange has 8 goals and 5 assists on the season. Fellow Wisconsin native Zach Urdahl has 7 goals and 3 assists, while junior forward Cam Mitchell is third on the team in points with 5 goals and 3 assists. (All five of Mitchell’s goals were scored in the last 8 games, including last Friday’s game-winning goal in overtime against Holy Cross.)

Mitchell was the featured player at the weekly press conference on Jan. 8. He appeared in 13 games for the Mavericks during the 2023-24 season, recording just a single assist. “The coaching staff and I had a long chat of just finding my game and finding that identity piece of my game,” Mitchell said.

Omaha has a 30-15-7 advantage in the series against the Tigers. The Mavs are 16-5-5 versus Colorado College in Omaha. 

The teams played two series during the season last year. This is the only scheduled matchup for the two teams this season. 

During the regular season series at Baxter Arena last year, Omaha won the first game 3-0 and tied the Tigers 1-1 in the series finale. 

The Mavericks went on the road to Colorado Springs for the first round of the NCHC playoffs, coming back to win a best-of-3 series to advance to the team’s first-ever Frozen Faceoff appearance at the XCel Energy Center in St. Paul. 

A close contest wouldn’t be much of a surprise... 12 of Colorado College’s games this season have been decided by one goal or less.

“We know we’ll get a good team coming here this weekend,” Coach Gabinet said at this week’s press conference. 

Special teams will likely be a factor: The Tigers are 10th in the nation on the penalty kill (87.9%). Opponents are 2-for-22 on the power play in the last seven games versus the Tigers. 

The Mavericks’ power play has been anemic as of late. The team went 0-for-9 on the power play during the Cactus Cup and allowed 3 power play goals.

Gabinet said the coaches continue to tweak the power play. “Coach Dave Noel-Bernier kind of revamped things a little bit even more this week. When it’s struggling like that, it’s good to look at it and make changes and keep trying new things and new combinations of personnel to try to get a jump start.” 

Mitchell said the Cactus Cup experience was good for the team. “We always talk about good teams always finding a way to win. You know, hard games and close games. We found a way down the stretch to get it done. So that was a big momentum thing for us as a group for the rest of the year and for that weekend.”

He said the series should be exciting. “We’re building up a pretty good rivalry with them. Every time we play them, they’re usually pretty close and hard games.”

“We got the right guys, and we got the right game plan as well,” Mitchell said. “I think as long as we execute our game plan, and we want it more than we should, we’ll be able to get the job done.”

Fun Fact: Colorado College head coach Kris Mayotte was an assistant coach at Providence College when the Friars beat the Omaha Hockey team 4-1 in the Frozen Four semifinals in 2015.

The west lot outside of the main entrance at Baxter — Lot 25 — is open to donors only (parking passes are required to park in that lot). The north lot — Lot 27 — offers free parking on a first-come, first-served basis, as does Lot 26 (west of the arena, across the creek). Omaha Athletics is also encouraging fans to park in one of the public garages at Aksarben Village.


Fans should arrive early, especially if entering via the west entrance. Have digital tickets ready to scan in the Omaha Mavericks app (or add them from your MyMavs account to your phone’s wallet app). The clear bag policy remains in effect at Baxter Arena, and metal detectors are in place at all entrances. All concession stands are credit/debit card only (no cash).

Series Preview: Omaha at St. Cloud, Dec. 6-7, 2024

After sweeping conference foe Miami (OH), Omaha is looking to build on its NCHC point total with a road trip to No. 9 St. Cloud. 

SCSU is 9-4 overall and 3-1 in conference. They are 5-2 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud this season. They are coming off a split with Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colorado. They won Friday night 3-2 and lost 0-1 in overtime in the Saturday game versus the Tigers.

Omaha is 5-7-0 (3-3-0 in NCHC conference play). Omaha is coming off a sweep of the Miami (OH) RedHawks at Baxter Arena on Nov. 22-23.

Omaha and SCSU are tied for fourth place in the conference with 9 points each. 

Junior forward Cam Mitchell met with the media ahead of the series with the Huskies. He said the sweep of the RedHawks gave the team confidence.

“It felt really good. Leading up to those games, we’ve played some pretty good hockey. I think we’ve come up on the short end of the stick, though. We’ve had a lot of one-goal games. I think after that last weekend, I think we should be able to keep the ball rolling, especially after a good week of practice,“ Mitchell said.

Mitchell recorded his first two goals as a Maverick during the series, both shorthanded tallies. “I was lucky enough to get my feet moving on that second one especially. And then [Sam] Stange making a great pass — and him moving his feet as well,“ Mitchell said. “I think just being in the right spots and having a little bit of luck, too. I think personally I’ve been playing some pretty good hockey, so it’s nice to kind of feel like this little weight is off my shoulders.”

Mitchell talked about cracking the lineup this season and changing his jersey number from 16 to 25 this year. “I think [the] first two years has been a little bit of ups and downs for me,” he said. “I think I just kind of wanted a full reset … it feels pretty good so far. I think I’ve had a good start to the year, and I’m hoping I can just keep contributing that.”

He joked that his mom was “a little upset” that he changed his number (“every jersey she has, has 16 on it,”) but he needed a “mental reset” and to “start from zero” and “build his way back up.” 

Mitchell added that he hasn’t yet played at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center and said he’s “excited to get on that open sheet.” 

Coach Gabinet said the team will get “a couple skates” on the Olympic ice sheet at St. Cloud before the series. “That’ll be nice just to get a little bit used to the size.” (SCSU is one of a handful of college hockey arenas that play on the 200 x 100 ice sheet.)

Looking ahead to the series, Gabinet said, “They play with a lot of speed and pace. They’re built for that Olympic-size rink, and obviously they’re ninth in the country for a reason.”

He said a few players are getting closer to getting back into the lineup after injury, including Zach Urdahl and Liam Watkins. Tanner Ludtke is expected to be out for the rest of the season, and Alexi Van Houtte-Cachero is likely out for this series.

Coach Gabinet also addressed how he puts together a game lineup. “I think ultimately the players determine the lineup by how they play and how they practice. And I think it’s been interesting — when you reflect back on the season, where maybe you have a guy in your mind [but] it hasn’t kind of came to fruition — both positively or negatively. I think that’s a testimony to the guys that are putting the work [in] and you might have a guy maybe a little bit lower coming in, and the next thing you know, he has played every game, or vice versa.”

“So, ultimately, the head coach has got to make a decision, and that’s not in [the player’s] control, and that’s what I tell ‘em – ‘It’s not in your control,’ – right?” he added. “So that [the player can] focus on is getting better, taking personal responsibility for yourself.”

“I want to win hockey games,” Gabinet said. “Everybody wants to win, so we’re trying to put the best lineup possible out there on the ice.”

Omaha and St. Cloud will meet for the 51st and 52nd games all-time this weekend. The Huskies lead the series 29-17-4 overall, and are 17-7-2 in games in St. Cloud. The last time the two teams met was in January, with Omaha getting an overtime win (7-6) on Friday night and a tie (1-1, with a shootout win for the extra conference point) on Saturday night to take four of six points in the road series.

The Omaha Maverick Hockey team held a press conference for local media on Dec. 4, 2024.
