Omaha Hockey 2024-25 Schedule Officially Released
We’ve been assembling the 2024-25 Omaha Hockey schedule since April 19, but the program released the official schedule today. (We had everything on it except the Dec. 29 home exhibition versus Manitoba, and the opponent — Wisconsin — for the Oct. 5 home exhibition).
Here’s the official news release:
The Omaha Mavericks have unveiled their full schedule for the 2024-25 season. Omaha finished the 2023-24 campaign with a record of 23-13-4. They secured the program's second winningest season along with its fifth NCAA Tournament berth and first ever NCHC Frozen Faceoff appearance.
Like last season, the Mavericks will open October with an exhibition. The Wisconsin Badgers roll into Omaha on Oct. 5 for the first time since November of 2019. It will be a special night at Baxter Arena as Mike Kemp Ice will officially be unveiled and celebrated. Coach Kemp was a long-time assistant with the Badgers before becoming the head coach at UNO.
The Mavericks officially open the 2024-25 college hockey season at the 2024 Ice Breaker Tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada. Omaha draws Massachusetts in the opening game of the tournament on Oct. 11. They'll finish the weekend with either host team Minnesota or Air Force the following night. The Mavericks will return home to battle Augustana on Oct. 18-19 and will wrap up October on the road against Minnesota State on the 25-26. It will be the first time the two Maverick squads have played each other in the regular season since October of 2015.
Following their Minnesota State series, Omaha will break for a bye week before opening up NCHC play with Western Michigan, Nov. 7-8. The series will also mark the celebration of UNO's 2024 Homecoming weekend. Omaha gets their first look at Arizona State as an official member of the NCHC the following weekend in Tempe, Nov. 15-16. The Mavericks return home to play the RedHawks of Miami on Nov. 22-23. During the series finale on Saturday the 23rd, Omaha will host their annual Military Appreciation Night in partnership with WoodmenLife.
The Mavericks meet St. Cloud State on the road for their opening series of December. They'll battle the Huskies in St. Cloud, Minn. on Dec. 6-7. Omaha heads back to Baxter Arena the following weekend to take on Lindenwood for the first time in program history Dec. 13-14. Omaha will break for the holiday and return to action on Dec. 29 in a home exhibition against Manitoba. The final contest of 2024 against the Bison will serve as Season Ticket Holder Appreciation Night.
The Mavericks open the new year in Palm Springs for the inaugural Cactus Cup hosted by UMass Lowell. Omaha will face Holy Cross in the first game of the tournament before playing Lowell or Michigan Tech the next night. A highly anticipated series against Colorado College is next up for the Mavericks at home January 10-11. Omaha wraps up January on the road against Miami (Jan. 17-18) and St. Cloud State at Baxter Arena (Jan. 24-25).
The Mavericks will meet the defending national champion Denver Pioneers Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 in the Mile High City. They'll return to Baxter Arena to face the Bulldogs of Minnesota Duluth on Feb. 7-8 and then hop right back on the road against Western Michigan, Feb. 14-15.
Omaha's final home series of the regular season will be against Arizona State on Feb. 28 and March 1. The Friday night game of the ASU series will serve as the Leap-for-a-Cure night in partnership with Methodist. Lastly, they'll face a familiar foe in North Dakota for their regular season series finale in Grand Forks, March 7-8.

UNO Hockey on TV 2016-17
I'll be updating this post as the season goes on as additional games on TV are announced. As of this update (Sept. 29, 2016), the Mavs will be featured in 10 televised games (not including NCHC.tv).
NCHC.tv
We LOVE our NCHC.tv subscription. We have the full conference subscription, so it allows us to watch most of the UNO Hockey away games as well as matchups between other conference foes.
According to the NCHC news release, this year's conference annual pass will have access to more than 130 games throughout the season, including almost all conference and home non-conference games. It will also include all exhibition games and the NCHC Tournament quarterfinal games.
The cost for a conference annual pass for this season is $104.95 -- making the cost less than $1 a game. (There was an earlybird special in August that was even less -- watch for that next year.) Or you can get a conference monthly pass for $24.95/month.
You can also get a school-specific annual pass (for example, JUST UNO Hockey games) for $89.95, or a school-specific monthly pass for $18.95 per month.
If you have questions about NCHC.tv, contact NeuLion at nchctv@neulion.com.
Please note: If you purchase a school-specific annual pass or monthly pass, these subscriptions automatically renew each year unless cancelled.
All games shown on NCHC.tv during the upcoming season will be in high definition (HD).
New this year: Viewers with subscriptions will be able to watch NCHC.tv on both Apple TV and Roku devices. (Last year, we mirrored our NCHC.tv feed to our TV using our iPad and Apple TV, but this year, you can watch it natively on the tv). Or, you can stream games from NCHC.tv on any desktop, laptop, tablet or mobile device with an Internet connection.
Catch a preview of NCHC.tv here:
You can watch The NCHC State of the Conference address on Thursday, Sept. 22 here:

CBS Sports Network
One thing I don't like about games shown on CBS Sports Network is that these games are then not available on NCHC.tv.
We asked the NCHC about this, and this was the answer:
The short answer:
"The CBSSN contract was created and signed before NCHC.tv existed and CBSSN wanted the digital rights, so they have them."
Here's the UNO Hockey games that will be on CBS Sports Network:
- Friday, Jan. 27 – UNO at Denver, 8:30 p.m. Central
- Friday, March 3 – Denver at UNO, 7:30 p.m. Central
NET Nebraska/Fox College Sports
Four of UNO's home games will be televised on NET Nebraska, with funding coming from the UNO Office of Academic and Student Affairs.
The games will include:
- Friday, Nov. 18 – Minnesota-Duluth at UNO, 7 p.m. (Fox College Sports)
- Friday, Jan. 6 – North Dakota at UNO, 7 p.m.
- Saturday, Jan. 21 – Miami at UNO, 7:30 p.m. (Fox College Sports)
- Friday, Feb. 10 – Western Michigan at UNO, 7 p.m.
American Sports Network
This channel, available over the air in Omaha, will feature four UNO games:
- Friday, Oct. 21 – Vermont at UNO, 7:07 p.m.
- Friday, Dec. 2 – UNO at Wisconsin, 7:05 p.m.
- Saturday, Jan. 7 – North Dakota at UNO, 7:07 p.m.
- Friday, Jan. 13 – UNO at Colorado College, 8:37 p.m.

Shifting NCAA Hockey Season Could Showcase Sport in Best Possible Light
![]() |
| The concourse in TD Garden at the 2015 Frozen Four in Boston. |
By Jon Brooks
Many years ago, former UNO Hockey Coach Mike Kemp brought up an idea about how he would be interested in shifting the start of the collegiate hockey season forward by a month or so.
In the intervening years, that concept stayed with me. I've gone back-and-forth as I have mused on whether it would be a better setup for the sport, or if the status quo is as it should be.
His argument was that you'd avoid the "heart" of the NCAA football season in October and early November, and also avoid much of the NCAA basketball postseason in March and April.
Considering the fact that NCAA hockey is largely a niche sport, it is worth considering ideas that might showcase the sport in the best possible light.
The obvious argument against starting the season in the middle of November is the fact that you'd end the season in early May. Such a move would interfere with NHL playoffs, and create problematic scheduling issues for a Frozen Four held at potential NHL venues.
That said, avoiding the NCAA Men's Basketball tournament each March would help alleviate the problem of "competing collegiate interests" trying to nab national media coverage. In addition, ESPN broadcasts NCAA Women's Basketball tournament and National Invitational Tournament (NIT) games on its family of channels -- oftentimes ESPN and ESPN2. That coverage has the effect of pushing the NCAA Men's Ice Hockey tournament games to ESPNU, ESPNNews and ESPN3 (which is their online streaming channel).
One could make the argument that moving college hockey's postseason out of the shadow of "March Madness" would better position the sport for national media coverage (something college hockey sorely lacks).
It could also change the in-season dynamic of the sport. Shifting the season would allow for more non-conference games to be played after the first of the year. Teams currently play some appealing non-conference matchups in October and early November -- games that might be better showcased after Jan. 1.
Conceptually speaking, it would be interesting to see some of those matchups (some having considrable marquee value) in January and early February. Such a move might better position those games for national television coverage (it would certainly be a more attractive time than during the football-heavy fall schedule), and put a greater sense of "importance" on such games in terms of perceived value for fans.
I don't want to meander on too much or go off on a tangent, but I've been intrigued by the notion of having one weekend in the second half of the hockey season reserved for "bracket buster" type games that would allow hockey-related media outlets to determine a handful of matchups with significance in the overall Pairwise Ranking comparisons (this might not be realistic from budget perspective, but it could be terrific from a competition perspective).
March is typically the time of year the hockey season heats up. It can sometimes feel like things are winding down just when the season is becoming interesting.
As I suggested above, NCAA basketball sucks up much of the oxygen this time of year. That point is evident each season when we go to various local sports bars and try to get them to commit a TV to the NCAA Ice Hockey tournament -- at the same time a slew of basketball games are on the air.
Making a shift would mean regular season collegiate ice hockey games (which tend to have local and regional TV coverage) would still be in the regular season at that point in time. The NCHC conference playoffs (as an example) wouldn't start until mid-April, and the Frozen Four wouldn't be until early May.
As long as the NCAA is tied to NHL venues for the Frozen Four, the possibility of shifting the season becomes much more difficult. Such a move might mean different, non-NHL venues would have to be considered. That would limit options significantly. The unknown (to me, anyway) is whether or not there is a non-NHL venue that could accomodate the event.
One other dynamic affecting the proposed season shift is the potential for professional teams to offer playing time to college players whose seasons have ended in early March each year.
There has always been something unsettling about watching college hockey players "drop out" in the middle of a semester to pursue pro careers -- essentially forfeiting credit hours. Shifting the season would mean those student-athletes wouldn't join pro teams until the following fall as AHL teams would have likely closed out their playoff chances by that point.
Whether or not we see a shift in the current NCAA Ice Hockey season structure, it is interesting to consider the possibilities. The sport needs to be allowed room to breathe, and the NCAA needs to see if it can find ways to promote and enhance the sport to increase the overall profile and prestige of the current system — or make a change for the future.
