Series Preview: Omaha at Maine, Jan. 3-4, 2020

The holidays are over and it’s time for the Mavs to go back to work! The team is in Maine for a non-conference series with unusual start times — Friday at 5 p.m. and Saturday at 11 a.m. It’s also an unusual series in that the games will be played in two different arenas in two different cities. Friday night's game will be played at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine, while Saturday morning’s game will be played at Cross Insurance Arena in Portland.

After splitting the series with non-conference foe Arizona State before Christmas, the team traveled to Maine (although half the bags and none of the sticks made the trip without trouble), leading to this lighthearted moment during practice:

It’s been quite some time since the Mavs have faced the Black Bears. More than 20 years, in fact. The last time UNO traveled to Maine, the Black Bears swept the series, 6-2 and 3-0. The two teams have only played each other four times, and the Black Bears have won three out of the four, outscoring the Mavs 23-6.

But that was a long time ago.

UNO is 8-8-2 overall on the season (2-5-1 in the NCHC, in seventh place, tied with Colorado College). The Mavs are 4-3-1 in away games, while Maine is unbeaten at Alfond Arena (6-0-1). The Black Bears are 9-8-3 this season and are coming off a 5-1 home win over AIC on Dec. 29.

Fans can expect to see Austin Roden in net for the Mavs, as Isaiah Saville will be returning from the Czech Republic after participating in the World Junior tournament as part of Team USA.

When:
> Friday, 5:00 p.m. CT
> Saturday, 11 a.m. CT

Radio:
Both games will be broadcast live on 1180 AM (Zone 2). Donny Baarns will provide play-by-play and Terry Leahy will provide analysis. Pre-game coverage begins 30 minutes prior to face off.

Series Preview: Omaha vs. Arizona State, Dec. 21-22, 2019

Home ice has been more “naughty” than “nice” to the Mavs over the past few weeks (the team is 3-4-1 at Baxter Arena this season), but the team and fans are hoping Santa won’t be leaving coal in their stockings heading into the holiday break as the Mavs play a rare Saturday night/Sunday afternoon series.

There’s reason to be optimistic: UNO finally broke through with a win against St. Cloud last weekend, earning a split against SCSU. The Mavs lost 4-1 on Friday night before eeking out a hard-fought 4-3 overtime victory on Saturday — the first Mav win against the Huskies in 11 tries.

UNO is 7-7-2 overall and 2-5-1-0 in the NCHC — currently in a tie for seventh place with Colorado College.

#14/16 Arizona State is also coming off a split last weekend with Michigan State. The Sun Devils beat the Spartans 4-3 Friday and lost 1-0 in OT on Saturday. The Sun Devils are 9-5-2 this season, including 6-2-2 in the last 10 games.

Omaha is 5-2-1 all-time against Arizona State, including 5-0-1 at Baxter Arena. Last year, the Mavs beat the Sun Devils 6-4 and 4-0 at Baxter Arena. But ASU is solid in regulation play — the Sun Devils have not trailed in regulation since a game vs. Alaska on Nov. 8.

Freshman goaltender Isaiah Saville will be absent for the Mavs this weekend as he is currently at camp with prospects for the Team USA U-20 team for World Juniors. Fans can expect to see freshman Austin Roden in net for the Mavs for one or both games this weekend.

Fun fact: Expected ASU goaltender Evan DeBrouwer split time in net with Roden when they both played for the Nanaimo Clippers during the 2016-17 season.

By Connor Willingham

This weekend, Alabama Huntsville comes to town to face the Mavericks for UNO’s regular season debut. This is the first time in Baxter Arena history that the Mavs have opened the season at home.

The Chargers have already been in action this year, dropping their opening series against UMass Lowell 1-5 and 1-3. This is the first time the Chargers and Mavericks have faced-off since 2014-15.

Because of the exhibition game on Monday, there was no Weekly Media Availability.

Series Preview: Omaha vs. Notre Dame, Oct. 19-20 at Baxter Arena

The Mavs started the season last weekend with a tie and a loss to Union College. This weekend isn't going to be an easy one, with #2/#3-ranked Notre Dame coming to town. Notre Dame is 1-0-1 on the season after winning the Icebreaker tournament last weekend. Notre Dame tied Mercyhurst (winning in a shootout) and beat Providence College to win the tournament championship.

It will be interesting to see if freshman forward Tyler Weiss returns to the lineup. He did not travel to Schenectady, New York last weekend due to an upper body injury. (Weiss is also part of The NCHC's Snapchat Takeover weekend crew, which leads me to think he won't be playing.)

Series Preview: UNO Hockey at Union -- Oct. 12-13, 2018

UNO Hockey prevailed in its exhibition against the University of Manitoba on Sunday, winning 6-1. Next up is a regular season series against a non-conference foe, Union College.

The Mavericks will face the Dutchmen at the Frank L. Messa Rink at Achilles Center in Schenectady, New York on Friday, Oct. 12 and Saturday, Oct. 13. Both games begin at 6 p.m. Central.

Union beat Army 4-1 last Saturday at home. They have been picked to finish fourth in the ECAC this season.

You can read the notes from this week's news conference here.

We haven't heard officially, but we believe freshman phenom Tyler Weiss may be out of this weekend's series with an upper body injury. Weiss' goal in the exhibition was the NCHC's #2 Play of the Week:

Omaha vs. Lake Superior State, Dec. 30-31 at Baxter Arena

The "road warriors" return to Baxter Arena this weekend after what seems like an eternity without a home hockey series. Jon and I were fortunate enough to catch the last Maverick series, a road trip to St. Cloud where we saw Coach Dean Blais pick up his 400th career win during the Friday night game (3-1), but the Mavs dropped their first road game of the year, losing 4-2 on Saturday, Dec. 10.

The Mavs have struggled at Baxter Arena over much of the the past year (dating back to January 2016). UNO is 2-5-1 at home this season, and the Mavs have gone 5-3-2 in their last 10 games. In an Omaha World-Herald article today, both Coach Blais and UNO Captain Justin Parizek talked about the importance of a second-half run, and how last year's second-half meltdown is still haunting them.

The Mavs last faced the Lakers in 2010. Lake Superior State is 8-9-1 overall (the Mavs are 9-6-3), but the Mavs lead the all-time series with the Lakers 14-9-5. Let's hope the wins continue.

Omaha vs. UMass Lowell: Oct. 28-29, 2016 at Baxter Arena

Well, last weekend didn't really go how we thought it might. Mavs were ranked in the Top 20 in one of the major polls, but surrendered two goal leads both nights to end up with a tie (the goal by Jake Randolph in the second overtime period didn't count officially as a win) and a 5-2 loss.

I chalk it up to overconfidence. We saw this last season a bit too (and in previous seasons). The team just doesn't play as well when they think they're better than the opposition. So this weekend's contest should be better -- but UMass Lowell is going to be tough. Ranked fifth in the nation, the River Hawks are 3-1-2, coming off a split last weekend. However, the Mavericks have traditionally played better when they're up against tough competition. The Mavs and the River Hawks have only faced each other twice previously -- both were single games within tournaments. The Mavs won both match-ups. It will be interesting to see back-to-back games between the two teams.

Working against the Mavs is that fact that they haven't officially won a game at Baxter Arena since Feb. 13. Once almost unbeatable on home ice, the Mavs have struggled as of late at home, so a win (or a couple of wins) this weekend is a must before beginning conference play next week.

Penalties have also been a significant issue through the first four games, and Tony Boone's Omaha World-Herald article (linked below) describes how the Mavericks are working to change their style of play to avoid making as many trips to the box.

There are a couple of activities going on this weekend. It's the first weekend of homecoming week, so expect more students than usual (although the actual HOMECOMING game will be next Friday, Nov. 4). Students are being encouraged to wear costumes to Friday night's game. It's also supposed to be a "Pink Out," although that hasn't been well publicized.

Wrapping Up The Weekend: Vermont Series

Well, that was a less-than-awesome start to the three weekend home series at Baxter Arena. Friday's game officially went down in the books as a tie, and Saturday, the Mavs lost 5-2.

Fans got to see a little "free" hockey on Friday. Following the 5-on-5 overtime, the game was officially classified as a tie. However, the Mavs and Catamounts played a brief sudden death 3-on-3 that ended when Jake Randolph buried the puck. This gave the Mavs a symbolic "win" and culminated in the first post-game lobby celebration of the year:

Saturday night, the Mavs had a stellar first period, jumping out to a 2-0 lead. However, they surrendered the next five goals to the Catamounts, losing 5-2. Chalk it up to the Parent's Night curse (players and their parents were recognized during the first intermission).

The Mavs dropped out of the weekly USCHO poll following the tie and loss. They were number 20 last week. This week, they're "receiving votes."

The Mavs didn't even receive votes in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine weekly poll:

Coming off two overtime games in Oxford, Ohio last weekend, the Mavs are back at Baxter Arena again for only the third home series of the year. They face Ohio State in a non-conference series that features a little bit of history.

Ohio State's head coach, Steve Rohlik, is one of the original UNO Hockey assistant coaches. Mike Kemp brought him on in 1996 when he started the program, and Rohlik almost succeeded Kemp as coach -- a little-known bit of trivia (but then Dean Blais was hired).

Hear what Rohlik has to say about this weekend's series:

Another important tie-in to Saturday's game is the inaugural Sheila Leahy Toys for Tots Drive. Sheila Leahy, wife of radio color commentator Terry Leahy, organized the annual Toys for Tots collection in conjunction with the U.S. Marine Corps. Sheila died this past year, and the event was named for her this year.
