Wrapping Up The Weekend: North Dakota Series (Jan. 18-19, 2019)

Well, the Mavs finally broke through with a win on Saturday night versus North Dakota, after putting in a solid effort against Denver the previous weekend. UNO Hockey nearly got a sweep, falling short on Friday night — giving up the game-winning goal in the final two minutes of play.

On Saturday, the Mavs came from behind, scoring two goals in the final 20 minutes of regulation to post a 4-3 win.

The actual victory — compared to the "moral victories" from the previous weekend's series with Denver — seemed to put a spring in the step of the coaching staff and players, as evidenced by the quotes in the Weekly Media Availability.

It also brought some levity to the 15th episode of the MavPuckCast, which also finds Jason and Jon discussing the subject of fan etiquette (in particular, visiting fan etiquette).

Looking Ahead to This Weekend:
Coming off Saturday night's win, the Mavs go on the road to the University of Minnesota Duluth, ranked #5 in the USCHO weekly poll. The Bulldogs are #2 in the NCHC with a record of 14-6-2 (7-4-1 in conference, with 22 points). The Mavs are 7-13-2 (3-8-1-1 in the NCHC), good for seventh place with 11 points. 

Wrapping Up The Weekend: Vermont Series

Well, that was a less-than-awesome start to the three weekend home series at Baxter Arena. Friday's game officially went down in the books as a tie, and Saturday, the Mavs lost 5-2.

Fans got to see a little "free" hockey on Friday. Following the 5-on-5 overtime, the game was officially classified as a tie. However, the Mavs and Catamounts played a brief sudden death 3-on-3 that ended when Jake Randolph buried the puck. This gave the Mavs a symbolic "win" and culminated in the first post-game lobby celebration of the year:


Saturday night, the Mavs had a stellar first period, jumping out to a 2-0 lead. However, they surrendered the next five goals to the Catamounts, losing 5-2. Chalk it up to the Parent's Night curse (players and their parents were recognized during the first intermission).

The Mavs dropped out of the weekly USCHO poll following the tie and loss. They were number 20 last week. This week, they're "receiving votes."

Polls, Awards, and Honors -- Week of October 26, 2015

After sweeping Air Force at home on the opening weekend for Baxter Arena, we're going to use this post to catalog the awards and honors for this week, and report poll results.

First up is the USCHO poll, released at 11 a.m. on Monday.

The USA Today / USA Hockey Magazine poll quickly followed. It was nice to see that UNO didn't drop in the poll, as some had surmised they might.

Update as of 5 p.m. 10/26/15: UNO Hockey did not garner any winners this week in the NCHC "Players of the Week" honors.

UNO Achieves Milestone in Weekly College Hockey Polls

Coming off a huge weekend in Mankato, UNO Hockey has achieved a new milestone in program history. UNO is ranked #3 in the USCHO weekly men's hockey poll, and #4 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll.

There are two national polls that rank men's Division 1 college hockey teams. Both polls are released mid-morning on Mondays during the season.

UNO finished last season (2014-15) ranked #4 in the USCHO poll, after losing in the semifinal game in the Frozen Four to eventual champion Providence.

Here's the news release from UNO:

OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha hockey team earned its highest ranking in school history, coming in third in the latest poll from USCHO.com.

The Mavericks also were ranked fourth in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll.  Both rankings were released on Monday.

UNO moved up seven spots in both polls and earned eight first-place votes in the USCHO.com poll, also an all-time high.  They earned one first-place vote in the USA Today poll.

The Mavericks are coming off a sweep at then No. 6/9 Minnesota State last weekend, winning 3-2 and 2-0.  It is their first 2-0-0 start since the 2010-11 season.

UNO is one of six NCHC teams in the USCHO.com top-20 poll.  North Dakota took over the top spot, followed by UNO, Denver (5), Minnesota Duluth (7), St. Cloud State (12) and Miami (18).  UND (1), UMD (7), Denver (8) and St. Cloud State (12) also appear in the USA Today poll.

The Mavericks play No. 20 Vermont in the first-ever meetings between the schools on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 16-17 in Burlington, Vt.
