UNO Hockey Press Conference Notes - Oct. 23, 2018

Coach Mike Gabinet, senior forward Ryan Galt, and senior defenseman Jalen Schulz answered media questions as part of “Omaha Athletics Weekly Media Availability” on Oct. 23, 2018.

Gabinet fielded questions regarding UNO Hockey’s Oct. 19 & 20 series against Notre Dame, and the upcoming series on Oct. 26 & 27 at Arizona State.

ON ARIZONA STATE...

Gabinet: “The buzz around the league is they’re much improved. They’ll just continue to get better and better obviously with their recruiting starting to take place. Definitely not a team to take lightly, being 4-2.”

Gabinet: “I just talked to a coach the other weekend that had played [at Arizona State’s facility] and things happen quicker.”

ON IMPROVING AFTER THE NOTRE DAME SERIES...

Gabinet: “We did a game review on Monday. So, again, just some tough love showing guys what we have to be better at. There is a number of mistakes that were made that just aren’t good enough at this level...we have to design things in practice to help the individuals get better.”

Gabinet: “We had to play a certain way to be competitive with [Notre Dame] and we didn’t do a good enough job of that.”

Gabinet: “Breaking the puck out was one thing we want to keep working at. We knew that would maybe be a tougher thing for us. So we worked on that a lot on Monday — getting back, supporting our D-men, helping get the puck out. And then, we have to keep focus on individual skill development. No matter what systems you’re doing, when you have individual breakdowns of guys getting beat or incorrect decisions, that’s not necessarily our structure failing us.”

Gabinet: “You get so caught up in game plans and things like that, you forget the individual development that needs to take place.”

Gabinet: “We can’t go toe-to-toe with teams like Notre Dame, and so we have to kind of get excited a little bit about playing a certain way...just like if Alabama Football was in town...you kind of need everybody on board to play a certain way to give yourself a chance at success.”

Gabinet: “I think sometimes if you get caught trying just to play like you normally do, or make plays...the smart decision is to have four shifts in a row where nothing happens and be happy with that...against a good team like [Notre Dame], sometimes your fans might not like it, but four or five shifts in a row where you’re just not giving them momentum is a win. To be able to accept that, and take pride in that, I think that’s an area we gotta keep improving at as a team.”

ON INJURIES...

Gabinet: “A couple guys out right now, Olofsson didn’t practice yesterday... Jones didn’t practice yesterday. Weiss is still out. Klehr-sy is still out.”

ON WHETHER GABINET REMEMBERS HIS FIRST GOAL WHEN HE PLAYED FOR UNO...

Gabinet: “Yeah...gosh. I can remember it. That’s probably pretty bad, eh? I think I scored at the Civic. My buddy Andrew Wong gave me an assist. We live two doors down from each other now. Isn’t that funny how that works out. He’s still helping me out...I borrow his lawnmower all the time.”

PLAYER REACTION TO THE NOTRE DAME SERIES...

Schulz: “We made a lot of mistakes, which is gonna happen. You can’t make the same mistakes again.”

Galt: “I thought, in a lot of cases, we actually played better on Saturday.”

PLAYERS FEELINGS ON THE UPCOMING ARIZONA STATE SERIES...

Galt: “They play more of a gritty game. They have more skill players now than they did last year."

Galt: “We have a job to get done. It’s harder to go down to what you’d call a vacation spot to play two games.”

Schulz: “We need to realize where we’re at — and start figuring things out quickly — so we can get on the right track.”

Galt: “I’m kind of excited for this weekend just because it’s an opportunity to play a full 60 minutes — we haven’t done it yet this year.”

Galt: “There’s a lot of families going. I was looking at the ticket sheet. Most of the parents are going down. Mini-vacation for them, too.”
